Age Group Rank = 3/8
Pre-race routine:

Up at about 5, went for a walk and had a light breaky. Got to the race about 1 1/2 hrs early and set up. Since this was my first race, I just copied other people's transition areas!
Event warmup:

Biked a bit, ran a bit, swum a bit- ate 1/2 an energy bar. I basically was just trying not to be too nervous...
Swim
  • 20m 10s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

My time was actually about 3 min faster than what is quoted... this was my first race and I came out of the water and (on the suggestion of the staff because of a 100meter run on woodchips) had my transition there. However, most every else just ran on the woodchips barefoot. Instead of transitioning in the transition area, I basically transitioned outside of the water and so added that time to my swim. Opps =)
But, the swim felt great! For my first race, I felt really strong and was actually second in my wave.
What would you do differently?:

Transition where I was supposed to. Haha.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This was a pretty small race (37 women, 40 men) and we didn't get transition times.
Bike
  • 38m 58s
  • 8.9 miles
  • 13.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I have a mountain bike (and I don't have slicks yet). I knew this would be my slowest segment. But, I still was happy with how it went. I didn't get passed as much as I thought and I even passed a few people walking on the big hill- which I biked up simply because I refused to get off my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Get slicks...
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 25m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good (besides the cramp in my calf). I felt like I had a good pace. Only had one moment of "I am so tired..."
What would you do differently?:

Pushed a little harder at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit, streched a bit. Was just pretty excited to have succesfully finished my first race.

Event comments:

The theme here- it was my first race and I was just happy to have done it. I felt as though it went better than I would have expected. I even got a medal for third in my age group =) and I got 7th in the women (which also can be attributed to the small numbers). I think I felt as good as I did because it was a very small race with lots of first timers so we were all nervous together.
My enjoyment of it brings me here to BT- and to planning to do one more spint before the summer is out!
