Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and arrived at the parking site around 4:45 a.m. From there I boarded a bus that took us to the transition area which was just about a half mile away. Since this was my first triathlon I was anxious to get there early and get transition area setup. However, I got there too early and just walked around and chatted with other participants.
Event warmup:

I walked around the transition area and did some light stretching.
Swim
  • 20m 1s
  • 2310 yards
  • 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

The substitute for the swim was a 2 mile run. I took it very easy and used this as a warm up for the long day ahead of me. Almost everyone in my age group passed by me.
Transition 1
  • 10m 12s
Comments:

I took my time in transistion by doing some stretching and drinking gatorade. I was not worried about my time but was doing everything to prepare myself for my longest ever bicycle ride.
What would you do differently?:

In future races, I will make more of an effort to speed up my time in transition.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 56 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Since this was first bike race I start out very easy and my pace was under 20 mph. After about 20 miles I felt very good and increased my speed to over 20 mph. The bike portion was a lot fun.
What would you do differently?:

Have more confidence in my biking ability and start out faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I was not concerned with my time. I did not care. I was focused on getting something to eat (bagel, orange juice, and water), stretching my legs, and preparing myself for the run.
What would you do differently?:

With experience, I will increase my transition time. However, I don't see the point in transitioning too fast at my level. If I stretch my legs and get something to eat, I will probably do better on the run than just zipping in and out.
Run
  • 00m
  • 13.1 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

After riding more than I ever have, my legs were very tired and the run transistion was rough at first but I gained momentum into the run. The day was very warm but the volunteers did a great job with the fluids.
Post race
Warm down:

I went swimming in Lake Michigan. I was so impressed with this part of Michigan and the Lake was so beautiful, clean, and the waves felt great.
I swam for about 30 minutes and then packed up and left.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of confidence in covering this distance.

Event comments:

I loved this race and Benton Harbor. I am already signed up for the 2009 race. I look to make a lot of improvement. I had a great time1
