Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 58/60
Pre-race routine:

Woke about 4:00, knew folks in the past hit traffic jams, nerves wouldn't let me sleep longer anyway. We packed up and headed to the parking lots. Good thing we traced a 'back door' and it was painless
Event warmup:

Light stretching, I had planned to so a small warm up at the swim start. Swim was canceled, so the walk to the start and back was my warmup
Swim
  • 22m
  • 2310 yards
  • 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

I've completed Olympic Dist, this was my first 1/2 Iron, the swim was canceled due to the chop, but considering the lifeguards in kayaks kept capsizing, I'm glad they canceled
Transition 1
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Not having to deal with a wet suit and the distance to the corral made a big difference for me
Bike
  • 3h 09m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.73 mile/hr
Comments:

Everything I have read and trained said that the legs just aren't ready to run anyway so go for it. Plus running in the heat is terrible for me, so I wanted to make up as much in the bike. My fastest training was 15mph, so I'm very happy with 17.7. Lots and lots of folks passed me, but I tried to do my best and stay to the right...only once I veered to the left too much and ticked a fast biker off, said I was sorry and continued.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in aero position, I think towards the end I was just tired and was too upright, I should have been able to cruise the downhills better.
Transition 2
  • 06m 32s
Comments:

I'm not one to immediate start running when I get off the bike, so I anticipated a slightly longer T2, plus I took a bathroom break which ate up 60-90 seconds. Oh well, I'd rather delay in transition than have to get off the bike later
Run
  • 2h 50m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 02s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

I need to do bricks to get better at triathlons
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

shear lack of speed, I don't do interval or tempo workouts and know I need to incorporate that next year to get a little faster and to feel better

Event comments:

Overall, I think organization was great, especially since they had to go to the backup plan of a duathlon. It appears they try to run a race for the elites and also try and accomodate the back of the packers. One day I hope to be a middle of the packer. I'll get there. I really liked the distances and think I can do it again next year.

Course: Course was ok, a few more hills than I expected, but nothing too brutal. I thought the double loop in Whirlpool was not going to be a pleasant experience, but there was a little shade here and there and better than I thought. Heat was a factor for me...THANK GOODNESS THEY PROVIDE ICE!
