Swim
Comments: Water was dark and oily. Not really fun to swim in. It tasted terrible, when unfortunately, I managed to swallow it. The current was strong and moving north to south, but the course was south to north, which made it interesting. After the horn, I ran north to the inside of the wave start before I went in. This worked really well. I had clear water almost all the way. Thanks Bill for the tip. What would you do differently?: Not show up to the race hung over on 3 hours' sleep. I need to work on surf entry. Transition 1
Comments: My foot didn't like the run from the swim into the transition area. I'm still not good on barefoot running over asphalt. What would you do differently?: My number was not attached to the bike right. I lost time taping it down. I'd Bike
Comments: Nothing in the legs. Held decent speeds, or so I thought. Splits are off from T1 through the bike and into T2. What would you do differently?: Maybe Iron Mountain the day before was a bad idea. This should have been way faster. Transition 2
Comments: Had a great moment with the sloppiest dismount of my racing career so far. Got a great gasp out of the crowd when I endo-ed and nearly ate it hopping off. What would you do differently?: Smooth out the dismount. I usually get those right. Run
Comments: Better than I thought, given what I had in me on the bike. Was able to keep a few people from passing me, passed more. Held off Brian until the very end. What would you do differently?: See bike and swim notes. Post race
Warm down: Oranges, wandering around, stretching (calves, hamstrings, hip flexors) What limited your ability to perform faster: Iron Mountain on Saturday. Showing up with three hours' sleep. Being hung over from the TNT fundraiser Saturday night. On a similar course last month, I was able to go 1:06 and change. All told, not a great race in the scheme of what I've done, but far better than I expected given its lead-in. Event comments: A fun race. Good for a tune up or just to get in a full sequence practice. Not a good test of yourself. Or, maybe it is if you're feeling healthy and just want to try as hard as you can to kill it.
