Swim
Comments: A brutal swim. How can such a short swim be so terrible? There were a ton of overzealous swimmers in my wave (the first) and I was repeatedly grabbed, kicked, scratched, smacked and pushed throughout the entire race. Never got into a rhythm, but still emerged from the water with a respectable time - I had been shooting for under 7 minutes, so I'm relatively happy to have made it through a good :30 south of that mark. Still, I'm incredibly disappointed by the tactics of some of my competitors. Scratching? Seriously? I have the mark on my leg to prove it. What would you do differently?: Stay focused and maybe veer off into more open water to get away from the riff raff. Transition 1
Comments: Since I had racked my bike toward the far end of transition, had a bit of a ways to run. Decent transition, would have liked to do this faster, but my head was out of the game at this point thanks to the rough swim. What would you do differently?: Come back to earth and try to run through this faster. Bike
Comments: Happy with my performance on the bike. A relatively flat course with just a couple small rollers. I hunkered down in aero position most of the way and try to keep a high cadence. For most of the ride, I was cruising b/w 24-25 mph. Satisfying ride. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty quick. Felt good coming off the bike. Run
Comments: Great run. Per usual, I passed a good amount of people on the run. Felt comfortable and cruised to the finish. Hit the hills well and fell into a nice rhythm. Time was a bit inflated by the climbs, but I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Open up my finishing kick earlier. Post race
Warm down: Just some light stretching and nutrition. What limited your ability to perform faster: Transitions need work. Also, I was mentally shaken up in the swim - I've never experienced that before. Although my swim split was pretty solid, the jostling kind of got me off-track a bit. Event comments: A solid race series for sure. It's really low-key, "just for fun" so it's tough to judge this one. Still, I had a good time, beat my goal of breaking 1 hour and outside of the swim, the rest of my experience was positive. Last updated: 2008-08-19 12:00 AM

Woke up at 3:50 a.m. to make the drive out to the East Bay from SF. Had a few sips of coffee, a double-portion of oatmeal and headed down to the car. Packed the car the previous night, so I was on the road by 4:20 or so. Arrived at the race site in pitch black darkness. Secured a decent transition spot near BIKE OUT and then headed out to body marking.
Met up with a friend of mine at the race site and warmed up with about a mile and a half run. Beautiful scenery! Also put in a couple hundred meters in the lake to get ready for the swim.
