Swim
Comments: Tough way to swim for me. The in and out were very hard. The across was actually the longest part of the course and I neailed it but the swim in was way off target. I ended up 100 yards aways from the exit shute. Felt good the entire swim but nervous about course. What would you do differently?: I guess I need to practice open water sighting. Its always a challenge for me but today with the small field it was harder to find people. Transition 1
Comments: Short run to transition. That was nice, race official actually pulled suit off my feet. Grabbed nutrition and put on gear. No socks, pretty quick. My best area for the day 5th of 13 in age group. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Came out of the swim at 154 hr. It took a while to get it down.I put it on 20mph and tried to stay close to that all day. Tremendous course, the bridge was a challenge but no onerous. Really pretty course, mostly good road. I drank water for first 10 miles then ate a rice kripsy. Finished gatorade at one hour. I didn't hammer the climb and my gears worked perfect all day. I stayed aero 98 % of first 40 but struggled the last 16 to stay in the aerobars. Held avg over 20 until mile 42 and then just held on. Had to get out the bars alot in the last 10 miles. Saw Marcy right after the turnaround, I knew she had my number so I tried to push. She got me at mile 51 and beat me by 2 minutes. I didn't bother taking feet out of shoes cause I was trying to make 2:51 on the bike. What would you do differently?: I need to get my miles up and focus on quality miles. I haven't done any long rides except group stuff since gulf coast and that showed in that I couldn't hold aero at the end. The other issue and the real root is my weight. I am at 199 and I am paying for that. Note Average Power was 170. Powertap still cutting in and out and it lost 10 miles of the race. I gotta figure out how to fix this. I think I can get that wattage or this distance back up to 185 with focused training. Transition 2
Comments: I was tired but felt pretty good. Put on shoes and took my time making sure not to forget my amphipod and my nutirition. I should have left the nutrition. 7/13 in age group. Run
Comments: Well, here we go again. Felt good for first mile and a half then the heat started getting to me. I knew if I could make it to the park I would be okay. By the time I got to the 3rd age station, I was struggling. I stopped, took some endurolytes and drank some extra gatorade and water. I was determined I wasn't going to relive Gulf Coast. I started running again and entered the park at 3.5 miles. I repeated the stop drill at miles 4 and 5. The shade kicks in quick and I was feeling much better by mile 6 and decided to stop the walking at aid stations. Saw Marcy and she looked great. Took a goo at the start of mile 6, then just as I was passing the boy scouts at mile 6 my stomach went crazy. I asked were the rest room was and they pointed a half mile off course. I saw a spot that looked isolated and I made it to privacy. Yuck. Got back at it and took a bit to get back to normal. The splits seem odd to me but I probably didn't run the straightest course. 7 and 8 weren't fast but I was moving forward. Saw Marcy again at 8.8 and she didn't look near as good as earlier. She told me to be careful on the nasty hill ahead. The hill really sucked. Up a bridge with horrible canting. I had to walk the downhill for fear of falling. I was so happy to be making the final turn. I did the mental math and tried to convince myself I could break 7 hours. Took another goo at mile 10 and went back in the woods again. No porta potties for me today. I need 16 minute miles to break 7 and I told myself go faster. 12 and 13 were 2 of my fastest miles of the day ! Happy to finish. What would you do differently?: not overheat and figure nutrition out a little better. Weight is the biggest issue and more long training events. Post race
Warm down: finished got water. marcy came over and suggested we go sit in medical. i must have looked bad and that was the most shaded place. i didn't get any treatment just rested. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weight and long training events. Event comments: Dispite a mediocre performance I am pretty happy with my effort today. Unlike gulf coast I never contemplated quitting. I adapted to the situation and kept positive. Only negative comment was no fruit on the course. Oranges and bananas are nice. We drove over here on Wednesday for vacation then race. Took it pretty easy all week and dropped bikes off yesterday afternoon> Ate chicken and pasta dish at condo then went to prerace meeting. Got to bed early but didn't sleep real well. Saturday morning up at 4:15 and had banana and muffin for breakfast, walked down to race site about 5:30. Got to the bike and my front tire is flat. When I checked the tire the day b4 I pullet out a little rock but I thought it was fine. Decided to change the tire and walked back to the room and switched the rear wheel I took off yesterday onto the front. Back to the transition area and back in business. Good reason to go to transition early. No rush, change was fast. Put on wetsuit at 6:50 and linved up for 7:10 start.
brisk walk back to condo to change tire.
