Swim
Comments: I was in the 3rd wave, which was moms, military, and athena. Evidently I was the only person in the military division...I forgot that I had signed up for that one! I made sure to start in front, and quickly pulled ahead with 2 other swimmers. One must've been really fast, because I lost track of her after a while. The other one was right beside me the whole swim, which kept me on my toes! What would you do differently?: I haven't been in the pool for a while, so there isn't too much I can be upset about...it's my fault! :-) Transition 1
Comments: I think that was the longest I've ever had to run to T1. My "T0" time was 1:50 for the run from the water to the transition area. I think I stepped on something, too, since my heel is bruised. I got to my bike, put on my shoes and helmet, decided against sunglasses, and booked it to the mount line. What would you do differently?: Watch where I step. Bike
Comments: It was raining by the time I got on the bike, and it was my first race on my brand new tri bike so I had to watch the wet roads on the corners. After each corner, I stood up to get back up to speed and make up time, though. I ended up passing a bunch of people and I don't remember getting passed at all! Overall, I'd say it was a pretty good ride! What would you do differently?: Nada! Transition 2
Comments: Pretty quick T2 for me. I decided not to worry about getting my Garmin off the bike, since it was such a short run anyway and I wouldn't be pacing myself much. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I started the run at full speed and vowed to just push it as hard as I could and worry about breathing later. 2.75 miles...just 2.75 miles and I can pass out or throw up when I'm done, but I can hold out for 2.75 miles! I had no idea how fast I was going, so I just focused on passing the next person ahead of me. I tried to stay on the side of the road because the ground wasn't as muddy there, and that strategy worked pretty well. It might've been a more direct route down the middle of the road, but I needed traction! With the winding course, I had no idea where the finish line was and kept thinking it would be right around the corner. This kept me going at a faster pace than I would've run if I had known how much I had left! When I finally got to the stretch just before the woods ended, I was wheezing pretty badly but I wasn't about to stop. I put in one final kick in the finish chute and was so glad to be done! What would you do differently?: Nothing! Post race
Warm down: Went to the lake to soak my legs in the cold water for a minute, got a drink, and ate a banana. By the time I packed up my transition area stuff, everything was soaked! I was so glad I had left a dry towel in my car! What limited your ability to perform faster: Rain, lack of swimming, fattiness...I've seriously been slacking on my healthy diet efforts lately--not with bad food, but just TOO MUCH food! After seeing the race photos, spandex doesn't lie...back on the diet for me! Event comments: There were problems with the timing and the race director said that the first 15 people to finish didn't get accurate times. I finished 16th in order, but I was in the 3rd wave so I knew I had to be higher than that in overall place. I took home 1st place in the military division (#1 of 1...whee!), but later got an e-mail that said that the race director decided to award the top 10 overall instead of just the top 3, so I ended up in 4th place. That makes up for the confusion with the times, but now I'm wondering how they're going to get awards to people who moved up in the age group rankings. If someone already took home the 3rd place AG plaque, but is now 1st in the AG because of the top 10 overall, do they just ask for the plaque back and hand it to the new 3rd place? Do they just make new ones? What happens with my military plaque...I'd gladly exchange it for a 4th place overall one but there was nobody else in the military division to give it to, so what will they do with it. It's all very confusing to me. I guess I'll find out what happens! Last updated: 2008-10-27 12:00 AM

Woke up, ate breakfast, headed out the door for the race site. Registered, racked my bike close to the bike out, and hit the bathroom. When I got back to my bike, there were latecomers trying to find spots on the racks and I had to scoot over to let them in. This gave me no room for my transition stuff, since the person next to me racked with her down wheel on the same side as mine. I just hoped she would be in an earlier wave and be gone when I got to T1.
