Pre-race routine:

woke up at 5am. Took 6 units of insulin and 20 units of Levemir last night. Ate cliff bar 1/2 of snikers marathon bar and banana. Drove to UNO and started to set up bike....relized I accidentally racked my bike on the wrong rack the night before and had to move it...no biggy though. Blood sugar 167 before swim
Event warmup:

about a mile walk from transition to swim start. Missed the bus drop off so was forced to walk

watch time out of water was 38:42 1:50/100yards...had to go threw strippers and long run bf timing mat

Did a little stretching and arm swinging before swim. Then entered the water in about 3 feet of water until swim start. started off with about 70 people or so in my wave. Start was decent except there was a lot of fighting. Very hard to get around someone with out someone else being there to run into....the caught up to some of the others in the wave that left 4 minutes before me and was happening all over again. So I decided to say screw the bouys and just swam real close to the seawall with no one else around me.....this worked out okay but I was not able to draft of anyone which I think would have helped a bunch....So after about 300 yards I started to feel a little restricted from my wetsuit bc my breathing was not good. I decide to slow a bit to find a more comfortable pace/rythm and stuck with it. Once in this rythm I felt okay....I think my swim would have been a lot faster if I just decided to follow the buoys instead of staying so far away. I think I did a lot of extra pointless swimming and more diestance because I didnt have that strait line to sight and swim. I know I can swim faster than what I did. I think also I was taking short fast strokes instead of longer stokes and gliding. O well...still pretty satisfied with swim...But really wanted to do around 1:45/100 yards....However, cant really loose that much time in the swim...just about 2-3 minutes.

Watch time 38:42....but had to exit water and let strippers take off wetsuit before crossing T1 mat.
What would you do differently?:

Follow the bouys so dont do unnecessary swimming. Also go back to technique and start swimming with longer strokes and gliding.

Comments:

Exited the water and used Strippers to take off suit. Of coarse stuck around ankles so had to help them out some. Did a good trot after that all the way to my bike. Tried to do a short cut through the bushes in trainsition to my bike but a volunteer directed me to an established transition route. Got to bike Slammed an Ensure for calories. Took blood sugar 106...Awesome! Glasses on, HRM on and Garmin on, helmet on. Shoes already on bike so grabbed it and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Well wanted to go faster but such a big transition and just had so many things to do. Dont know much more I could do to go faster. Went pretty smooth for the most part.

Headed out I just started flying. The Zipp 808 and 900 disc combo was awesome. Had a tailwind going out and was holding about 23-26mph for a good 25 miles. Hamstrings got a little tight around here and did some stretching. I was blowing by people and just ended up staying on the left side of people just because I couldnt find anyone at my pace to merge into. Looking at my speed I was thinking I was going out too fast...But I felt real comfotable and and heart rate was a little lower than I wanted it to be....so I decided to hold the pace. Just think the Zipps were doing me good. At turn around hit the head wind but was still able to keep about 19-20mph. Then down HWY 11 and at turn around there I the head wind really started to kick and stayed there the next 26 miles and even got a lot worse the closer I got to transition. The last mile on Lakeshore drive was horrible. I was probably around 16mph. Then the consecutive overpasses came up. Very steep with a strong headwind....was at 8-9 mph at one point climing up that hill..... A little ways before this too my gears started slipping. I was so pissed about this...I just could not sit in the gear that I wanted without it slipping back and forth. I think this slowed me down a bunch too on the way back.

Finally got to transition and still felt pretty strong and was ready for a run. Hoped off bike with shoes on and did a little trot back to rack. Blood sugar was 135. Took about 3 bottles of gatorade. GU high electrolyte bottle and a little of bottled water. Ate 1 cliff bar and about 3-4 gels on the bike. Took about 6-7 sodium tablets too througout the coarse when legs felt like they were cramping up. Pretty happy about nutrition.

Very happy with my bike split. I definalty was not trying to get >20mph. I would have been happy with around 19 especially with the winds. Love the Zipps
What would you do differently?:

Tighten and check gears before a ride. Had to pee with about 10 miles to go but decided to just hold it to transition so I wouldnt loose time for stopping.

running jump off bike. Trotted to rack. Drank another Ensure just to make sure my calories were good. Shoes and socks on pretty quick with visor and headed to port a potty. Took the longest wizz. Think Ill be in the guiness book of world records for that one. Added about 1 min to my transition time. Blood sugar 135. Thought I would need insulin with all that i was eating but worked out awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Try to learn to pee on the bike.....just cant do it.

Comments:

Very Disappointed in run. Started off good but just a little tight. Wanted to do sub 2 hrs. And with the first 1/2 of the run I though I was going to be a little over but close to the 2 hr mark. The sun was heating up at around mile 3-4. This I tried to fight it with more water and ice down the shirt and pants but the humitiy was kickin. Thought about slowing down but I knew if I did toward the end I would have had to pick up the pace to make up for the time I lost so decided to stick with my 9:30ish pace that I was keeping. Dayna said that she thought I would finish at around 5:42. Doing the math with this pace that was exactly the time I was going to finish so I was pumped. 5-8 were tuff. At this point I just kind of wanted it to be over. After 8 miles I was thinking dammit.......5 more miles to go....just keep holding on!!!!! At mile 10 I was planning on picking up the pace bc was only a 5K left right????!!!

Nope....around here my legs were like lead and they were moving but just could not move fast enough. My heart rate was actually slowing down. Cardiovascular system was good. It was my legs that were throwing in the towel. Dammit......had to do a little walk just because my running pace was so close to my walking pace anyway....after the first walking break it was a mess. Now I was getting nauseous and I felt like I was not digesting my fluids.....

Mentally this was tuff because I kept saying go but my body was not letting me....I tried to do fight through it routine but I didnt last too long and then I was walking again. The last 5K felt like a marathon. The street was just damn long. Hit mile 12 and was like just one more mile....just do it....but my legs would not fire. The harest thing about this half Ironman was to walk by people who were cheering me on and not give them the run by that I wanted to. Any way turned down Decatur and knew it was almost over but still such a huge run. Wasnt able to do any sort of sprint until I hit the finish shute and I seen 2 guys trying to sprint past me. Nope......I took off and wasnt passed. Dont know where that energy came from.

drank everything in fuelbelt. Took in lot of water and gatorade at stations. Took in about 3-4 gels.
What would you do differently?:

More Bricks and longer runs toword the end of training. Didnt really do much over 10 miles with about 1mth to go.

Wish I had a better run but still not too bad...could have been worse.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed Finish line to see my mom and pops right there with Dayna and Stacey there to greet me. Dayna's mom and step dad where there too. So happy there were there at the right time to see me cross the line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just hit a wall. Heat got to me and just lost energy. Think nutrition was good just crappy heat and humity.

Event comments:

Wanted to sub 6 hrs and did 5:49....Even though run wasnt the best still very happy with race.
