Pre-race routine:

Stayed up until 12am trying to fix tire preasure issues. After being defeated, just hoped someone would be at site to help in the morning. Thank god they were. Then I tossed until 2 am. Up at 4am and had banana, gel and Clif Bar. Sipped on drink and left for race at 4:45am. Registered with no problem and then got things ready with plenty of time which is rare for me (normally rush)... Amen I got plenty of sleep Friday night.
Event warmup:

I ran part of the bike course and last .50 mile of the run. Maybe 8-9 minute warm up. Then looke dfor restroom. 1st time ever that there were no lines! Once I walked to swim start, did about 5 minutes of warm up there in the water.
Swim
  • 07m 55s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have been working on swimming a lot. However had not trained at all for two weeks du2 schedule @ work. I had good technique etc, but not the speed I should have. It was a simple course and I still had a little trouble staying on point. There were no buoys or markers (not that it was needed) so you had to keep a landmark on the shore as exit point. Overall I felt pretty good and it definately could have been slower.
What would you do differently?:

Just have to keep training consistent. Tempo was slower than I like and I felt too comfortable at the end realizing I should have gave more on swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Race had small transition area and very easy to find/rack bike. Only trouble I had was getting helmet strap to lock and that was maybe 2 seconds. Overall though, good time. 45 seconds doable.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, had it together here.
Bike
  • 28m 26s

Comments:

I had tons of Bike problems night before and that morning mechanic helped fix tire issue. Computer was also not reading MPH. Then on the course, my rear brake was sticking. Not good since there were a lot of turns on the course. All my fault. I had not trained on Bike in two weeks and it showed. I had no stregnth in my legs and all the technical issues were avoidable and should have been fixed prior. That said, it was still ok time. I started in last wave and that created even worse lap traffic problem. A lot of folks riding on the left who should not have. Passing was tough. I also need to get better on turns/cornering. I always lose distance on competitors by bad technique and work harder after turn to get back up to speed. Although dismount was good and I got off the bike in good fashion.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work the bugs out of the Bike prior to race day. Also train on turns etc.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Pretty good considering dismount area was packed. Got helmet off, shoes on, grabbed visor and race belt and was off. I could not get race belt connected for a while. Not sure if something wrong with belt. Anyway, I was happy with time, 1st in Division.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting belt on faster.
Run
  • 19m 13s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Started pretty slow as I ussually do. Each 1/4 mile felt better and I turned it on last .50 mile. Really only part of training I have been keeping up with. Run is ussually my weakest even and if I would have given more, would have been my strength that day.
What would you do differently?:

Try to go out with more speed. See what happens if you dont hold back as much. I NEVER do this. Also need to use lube in my shoes for blisters etc. Did not feel it until after run, but I now have nice quarter size blisters on my heels from no socks and lack of lubricant I normally use. Dumb move.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bottle of water and sat down for a minute or two. Then walked to see results and grab a bite. Saw a few folks I knew and decided to stay for awards since I got 3rd in division. Missed 2nd by 10 seconds, uuuhhhggg. Took off sneakers asap to relieve blisters.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training two weeks leading to the race. Plus bike problems did not help.

Event comments:

Well organized race. Still wish it would have chance to host on Singer Island in the future though. This venue is too short a course.
