Pre-race routine:

365 male contestants. Arrived early enough. Normal routine, set up area, chip, marking, saw a few friends. Ate a breakfast bar and had some Hornet juice.
Event warmup:

Took a short jog and swim.
Swim
  • 17m 10s
  • 821 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Some improvement but this still feels like my weakest leg!
What would you do differently?:

Improve goggles
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

It was a fairly long run to T area but got changed pretty fast. Put shoes on standing and ran to mount line. Jumped on and got in clips pretty well despite uphill grade.
Bike
  • 41m 6s
  • 15 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Rained fairly hard for middle 20 minutes. Took off sunglasses to see. A good ride overall.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Had a small spill at dismount line due to combination of factors. Nearby crash, wet surface, downhill grade and left shoe not fully unclipped. Skinned knee and was up in 2 seconds. Crap! Had another bike in my position so had to move over. The rain had gotten my run shoes pretty wet so was more difficult to slip on.
What would you do differently?:

Totally unclip or learn how to get out of shoes before dismounting.
Run
  • 28m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Good start uphill without brick pains. Held a good pace and pushed through blisters at about mile 2 caused by wet shoes. Kept good drive and sprinted last 200.
What would you do differently?:

More speed interval training would have helped.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked around. Downed a water bottle. Walked back to T area to change shoes and shirt. A little light headed at first.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness could be better by 5-10 lbs. and more swim strength. Better run speed too.

Event comments:

A very well run event. Now that event is separated into 2 days, Saturday had many strong competitors from outside the Charlotte area. There was a moving tribute to Dick Kelley a past competitor who is dealing with ALS.

Took a more measured approach at the start and felt good throughout. Goggles fogged early and really couldn't see 2nd marker until close. Just stayed with pack. Breathed mostly on left side which makes me drift right. Swam onto shore for 250 yd. run to T area.
