Pre-race routine:

Came up the day before. Will say that the logistics of this race made getting everything set up difficult. Checking in, attending briefing, the parking and the pickups lalala... took a good amount of time. It was fun to see the 30 plus members of ATC who were also doing the race!

Stayed at the La Quinta the night before. John's parents came up, which was great. Went to Outback with them and was in bed by 9ish.
Event warmup:

We didn't get to transition till 6:20 or so in the morning. By the time I got everything together, I missed John getting on the shuttle to go to his early start. Moving 3400 people takes a long time!

Got down to the start right before his wave went off but didn't see him. Wandered around putting on my wetsuit and looking for bathrooms.

For some reason I was more nervous about this race than the other ones I have done this year. I did my first tri exactly 5 months ago and my first half two weeks after that. I have been training really hard for the past several months and I was really hoping that would be reflected in my performance.

Now I know that I had three distinct advantages going into this swim that would help my time. One, the current, two my wetsuit and three the fact that my navigation and sighting ability would become less important in a point to point swim.

All of things combined to help me get a great time! It was a little hairy at the start and I had trouble getting my breath but once I got into a groove it seemed like it only took a few minutes.

I know my swim was fast because of mostly external factors, but I definitely have improved this season too. I bested a number of people that normally/used to beat me on this swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Keep on swimmin..

My goal was 35 minutes plus whatever bit the current helped so this blew me away.

These swim times can't be compared bc its ocean versus downriver, but what the heck

Slow. I put my helmet on backwards... what is with that! And I buckled and and tried to run out of transition like that. I also dropped my sunglasses and had to go back and get them.

Tried to keep my heart rate in the low 160s, thinking that was still too high to run a good run afterwards. Basically kept it pretty steady. Passed a lot of people but got passed plenty too. Kept having to calm myself down and remind myself that my race wasn't on the bike!

After the first water stop, I saw Annie, who told me that John had a mechanical issue and was stopped. I felt really terrible because it was his first half and I knew he wanted to do well!
What would you do differently?:

Cycling focus this winter.....
However, my goal was to beat my GC time of 2:56 then run a decent half which I did. So I beat my goal.

May 09- 2:56 on a completely flat course
Sept 09-2:50 on a flat course with a few hills and grades and can run afterwards?

Priceless!

Comments:

Felt great off the bike. Felt like I was jogging for the first few miles but I knew it would get harder. Was averaging in the seven- teens for the first four miles. After that I didn't get tired so much as it started to heat up and get really sunny.

Passing through the town with all the cheering crowds was awesome. The ATCers were out in full force and had the best cheering squad by far. I also heard Coldfire who was like "Go ATLrunr" which threw me off for a sec before I realized who it was!
What would you do differently?:

I was happy with how I held it together to come under 1:40. My original goal was to beat 1:45 and hopefully 1:40

Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with John's parents and the other club members. John finished shortly after me and had a great attitude despite being sidelined for 45 minutes with his bike issue.

We hung out for a long time and cheered the remaining participants on. It ended up being a great course and I think nearly everyone we knew PR'd!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Im just going to keep on training and hopefully keep on improving! I have absolutely loved doing this and hope to keep at it for a long time.



Event comments:

I totally exceeded my goals and was very happy about the race. My best case scenario predicted time was about 5:10- 5:15 and the goal that I actually told people was "5:20s."
