Overall Rank = 180/194

Age Group Rank = 16/17
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30. Got ready, had an oatmeal bar on the way, and got to TA about 6am. Set up TA and had a Cliff bar.
Event warmup:

Ran back and forth to truck for various things. Swam ~100 yards with swim cap (first time ever). Stretched some and waited.
Swim
  • 34m
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt pretty good in the water. I started near the back of my wave. I wasn't sure exactly how far out we could wade prior to the start. Apparently, it was a little farther than I was. I swam pretty good, outside of a little side to side. The river curved slightly so my navigation was a little off. I swam beside a guy in my AG for the majority of the swim portion. It helped to be able to gauge my speed consistency and to sight off of him.
What would you do differently?:

Overall, I am very pleased with this performance. I wish I would have swam a little faster given my time, but as this was my first OLY distance, I wouldn't have changed it on race day.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

This was a pretty typical transition for me. Struggled (as usual) a little getting my shirt on quickly. Good news was with the wave starts the TA was fairly cleared out being that I was in the last wave.
What would you do differently?:

Not much to do differently. Still might consider getting something that I can swim in and not have to put a shirt on in transition.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 51s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 14.78 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a tough bike for me. I started out fairly strong but the wind was at my face on the way out. My average speed quickly dropped in the wind and on the hills. After my speed fell to average 15 mph I couldn't get it turned around to pick back up again.
What would you do differently?:

Practice practice practice! Not much more to do than that. I could have pushed myself more, but I was already pretty worn out by the time I got to the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Dismount while riding, ran into TA and racked bike. Actually turned back around to get a quick drink before the run. Leaving T2 I started to head out the wrong way (different exit for the run) but was assisted by the race director and other volunteers. No real time loss here.
What would you do differently?:

Remember which way to exit TA. Not a lot to improve here.
Run
  • 1h 19m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Incredibly tough run for me. This was not an easy run like I'm used to experiencing. After a tough bike, I started this run tired. When I got on the dirt road my energy level was depleted. After the first 2 miles I began to incorporate walking. This was a mistake because that's what my body wanted and I couldn't get back into a good running groove. I felt dehydrated so I stopped at every water station (roughly every mile) and drank a cup of water and/or gatorade and dumped water on my head. I walked about 3 miles of this 6 mile run and still ended the race tired.
What would you do differently?:

More bike/run bricks. I probably should have drank more water on the bike and less on the run. Although I was incredibly thirsty on the run and couldn't get enough water, my stomach felt sloushy. Also, I should have run with a hat in this incredible heat. Outside of these, run more, run more, and run more!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to tent and sat down in the shade. Had several cups of water and gaterade. Ate a banana when I left the race site and continued to drink lots of fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I really believe I didn't prepare well enough for this event. Although I practiced tons, I didn't have enough volume to really compete in this event. My bike and run were poor performance. Despite all this, I'm glad I completed this thing standing. I look forward to being better prepared and kicking tail next year now that I know what to expect.

Event comments:

This was a great race and a great first OLY. It was well organized and well prepared. I enjoyed the race although I hoped for better performance.

Course: "Road to Hell" consisted of a short run through the park to the dirt road with no shade and constantly rolling hills. Didn't seem like there were any flats on this run. Also, portions of the run were loose sand, like running on a beach.
