Comments:

It was borderline freezing when I got dressed, so I debated the thermal tights vs the running compression shorts. Top was underarmor with the long sleeve race shirt. Dunno how people raced in full coats+toques+mitts.

Last few races I've run with my training partner Brian (we're both doing IM France) however he's done several mars, imc, deathrace, etc where I'm a coucher up until 2 years ago so he pulls me along.

We decided to go 15/km secs faster than our last HM (1:46 in Sept) and it went really well. Was still able to speak but not hold a conversation. Legs and feet felt fine - a few sharp pains but they didn't stick around.

First 10K of the race was about 1 min quicker than my fastest standalone 10K race so that will be interesting to see in 2 weeks (yearly 10K) how the winter base running has helped.

When 5K left, he was gassed but I wasn't so I bumped it up a bit. Ended up crossing just about 1 min faster which was great motivation for the IM race.

What would you do differently?:

Go a little harder in the first 4K or so, up the pace a bit more to get the HR up to 160. I still had a bit too much juice at the end for sprinting/speed.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked it off, some stretching. Waited for Dan (1:48ish) and Connie (2:40)

Then a big breakfast at Ricky's grill, and home for a hot tub.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tried to be near the front but there were still 100s of slow(er) people in front, and running beside each other. Threading the needle in that first 2K was a pain in the ass. If you're walking after 5 mins, gtf to the back.

Event comments:

Good race. 14 mins faster than last year, 6 mins faster than last HM in Sept.

Overall: 0/1833
Performance: Good
Held 4:45 pace for pretty much the whole race, aside from the steep uphills. Avg HR was 156 which is less than the last HM, but I held 170 for the last 3-4K.
Course: Mt Royal east to new overpass, res clockwise, back over overpass then back to Mt Royal. Much less impact to vehicles than closing crowchild.
