Pre-race routine:

Up bright and early at 5:00am. Had a couple of muffins, a powerbar, and a glass of milk.
Event warmup:

Didn't wear the wetsuit even though it was legal to use, so I got in the water for a 200yard warmup, more than anything just to get used to the cold water.
Swim
  • 19m 12s
  • 1000 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't feel realy great on this swim. A little rough at the start with bodies banging but it settled down after a few minutes. Only my 2nd open water swim of the year for me, so sighting was an issue. It did get better as I went along so it's all good.
What would you do differently?:

practice OWS more. probably wear the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Long haul up the hill to trans factors into a long T1 time.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 4s
  • 27 miles
  • 21.58 mile/hr
Comments:

The ride started out hilly within the complex for the first 5 miles or so and then turned out onto the open road and hit rollers. I was taking 2 endurolytes every 20 mins and nibbled on shot bloks throughout. Drank half a bottle of gatorade and half a bottle of water. Overall it was a great ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

Kinda wished I would have drank a little more water but it didn't really affect my run for a short race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

The usual routine, moved with purpose and quickly but thorough. Popped a couple more E-lytes on the way out.
Run
  • 45m 24s
  • 6 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt great right off the bike. Clocked my first mile at 6:55. My 2nd mile at 7:07 which surprised me since it was almost all uphill. I fell off that pace a little bit over the next 2 miles. Mile number 5 (same hilly mile as mile 2) was just under 9 mins. Mile number 6 I picked it back up to finish strong. Took 2 E-lytes at miles 1,3,5. Took water every mile. If this were a longer race I would have ate some food but passed on it since it was only 6 miles. A great run for me considering how hilly it was.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little more hill work training and maybe a little bit to eat early in the run could have helped me at mile 2 and 5. I'm really happy with this run as it stands though.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my family and headed to the food tent. Had a plate of nachos with meat and cheese and a 7-UP. MMMMM good! Hung out to watch some other finishers, then headed home.

Event comments:

Goal time for today was sub 2:30, and best case was hoping for 2:25 so I exceeded my expectations and was elated! An 11 minute improvement from last years race. As usual the Ultramax crew put on a top notch race, one of the reason I like doing thier races. Big thanks to the great volunteers!
