Swim
Comments: I fell into my regular breathing pattern pretty quickly, but struggled with sighting, especially on the last leg of the triangle, which was straight into the sun. I wasted a lot of time and energy trying to make sure I was pointed in the right direction. What would you do differently?: Perhaps one day I will overcome my laziness when it comes to swim training. More OW swims would help too, I could definitely use some sighting practice. Transition 1
Comments: Unfortunately T1 time is included in the swim split. There was a very long run in the sand (full of sharp rocks and clam shells) back to the transition area. I didn't struggle a lot getting my wetsuit off, but I forgot to bring a small towel to clean my feet off, so that slowed me down a little. What would you do differently?: I need to practice my transitions. Bike
Comments: The first hill had my legs and lungs burning, but it was short and I was able to recover on the downhill. The course was different from last year, out and back with the worst hill at the beginning... good practice for Wildflower! I tried not to push it too much, I'm still trying to be careful with my knee. Split time includes T2. What would you do differently?: Nothing that I can think of. Transition 2
Comments: I just changed to Speedplays and haven't gotten used to running on the cleats yet. For some reason I just felt like I took a long time to do everything. What would you do differently?: Take less time to put on my socks. Or better yet, train my feet to deal with running without them. Run
Comments: I treated this as a training run until the last half mile or so. My knee felt pretty good for the whole run. The relatively flat course on a nice wide road was a big improvement over last year. What would you do differently?: At some point I'll feel comfortable testing my knee with a harder pace. I'm definitely not there yet! Post race
Warm down: Had a slice of pizza, gatorade, water, and met up with my people. They had things to do, so we didn't stick around for any of the post-race festivities. I did feel a bit wiped out, so I took a nice hot shower and a nap, then went and had some bbq and a few beers. What limited your ability to perform faster: Since my knee injury, I've had to reset my expectations for this year, especially the beginning of the season. I'm just trying to get back in the swing of things. Fortunately my lack of fitness (and not my knee) was my limiting factor in this race. Event comments: A well-run race in a beautiful location. As a Cal Poly alum I plan to do this race every year. Hopefully next year I can do the oly. It feels good to be a triathlete again!! Last updated: 2009-03-27 12:00 AM

This race was local for me, although I did have to go up to SLO to pick up my race packet the night before. We had dinner there..... mmmmmmmm, SLO brew, I refuse to call it Downtown brew.
I had to dig out a checklist, it's been so long since I raced. Got my stuff ready the night before, went to sleep around 10. Got up at 5:30, got husband, dog, & stuff into the truck, got coffee, picked up my mom, and showed up at the race site just before 7.
I figure all the walking and running around is a good enough warmup. I squeezed into a spot on the already full racks, set up my stuff, got my chip and got marked, and waited around for awhile. It was amazing, there were still people showing up at 7:45, the (widely publicized) transition closing time. I wonder where they put their bikes, considering that I had a hard time finding a spot 45 minutes earlier. Oh, and I made the mistake of wearing flip flops on the frost-covered grass, and froze my feet.
I was in the second-to-last wave, so I waited on the beach for a long time, during which my feet completed the freezing process, my toes died, turned black, and started falling off. Not really, but it was pretty cold. The air was cold, the sand was cold, the grass was cold, I was cold. Also, the ground was covered with sharp rocks and clam shells, which stopped hurting after my feet became numb. Getting in the 58 degree water actually wasn't that bad in comparison.
