  • Comments: Good race, apparently it has a 30% track record of turning into a duathlon. (2 out of 6 yrs) I probably won't do it again but it was a good experience to do once.

  • Overall course based on my ability: Too hard

  • Comments: I will definitely try to fit this race in again. My only complaint, really, is the post-race food. It is good, but I think a little more variety (fruits etc) would help. As much as I love pizza, I have trouble forcing down slices of salty tomato pie after a race (ditto to post-race hoagies). The organizers can't do anything about the air temp, but I thought they were well prepared with aid stations fully staffed by volunteers who could hold 6 cups in each hand! I would have preferred a triathlon, but I'm happy I can now call myself a duathlete. I'm only rating the course as Too Hard due to the temp - the bike and run terrain are actually fairly flat and fast - the ability to not handle the course well was totally due to my conditioning and decision making.

  • Comments: Not too bad overall. Time was slower than other years, even a couple minutes slower than 2006 when it was also a du, but it was more enjoyable, even with the heat.

  • Comments: Must say that I cannot recommend this race: Heat and cancelled swim are of course fate and noone's fault. However the race organization failed in several regards, especially given the hefty fee: transition organization, crowded bike course, should have had more cooling support on the second run

  • Comments: Overall I think I accomplished my goal of having a good race (and getting some mojo back). I also had some fun and emotional time for my Dad too. Intellectually, things are a bit jumbled because of the fact that it was a du not a tri. IMHO du's, at least this one, was harder than the tri. My legs, back, and shoulders soreness can attest to that. Once again I did not follow the plan very well but had a good race. I think it shows that my run fitness is coming along after a terrible spring. Nutrition was fine, but hydration was on the weaker side as I took two sips of fluids the whole race up to the 10k 2nd run mile. I think I am getting back on track....

  • Comments: I thought the organisers did a great job under incredibly difficult circumstances. They showed respect for the tragic circumstances of the Saturday but still managed to go ahead with a well organised duathlon. Given it was my first Philly Tri (amd second Olympic) I thought there were too many people for a two loop bike course which also overlapped with a run course; the Black Road descent is plain dangerous as you have slow cyclists on first and second circuits mixing it at high speeds with fast cyclists. Add the bumpy road under the bridge and there could be a really bad crash there. But the volunteers were great, there were plenty of aid stations, and all the organisation was mostly smooth (bike racking in my area was chaotic as the numbering had gone awry). Supporters had to park quite a distance away - shuttle buses were a good touch. Immediately finishing the race I said I wouldn't come back. Now I'm not so sure.

  • Comments: One of the more expensive tri's I participate in but it's always well run and organized. Really like the challenge of the course...can't wait until next year!

  • Comments: Always a great race. Fairmount Park is a fantastic venue and shows off a great side of the city. Found out later I was 4th in my AG out of 158 so I was pretty happy about that. Since Philly is part of the Toyota/Lifetime series, this qualifies me for free entry into the championship race in Dallas in October. Pretty cool as I don't usually win anything!

  • Comments: This is an outstanding race and I only hope the tragedy from the sprint race will not tarnish its image. There are so many volunteers it almost seems like they outnumber the number of athletes. Even though the race was switched from a Tri to a Du, everything ran like clockwork. There were plenty of aid stations. My only comment would be that all the aid stations should have had ice. I think I may have been able to finish stronger if I would have been able to cool my body temp. There's only so much you can do pouring warm water on your head. I will sign up for this race again next year... it is a world-class event on a great & challenging course.

  • Comments: I love the Philly Tri. Where else can a virtual novice at the sport go out and perform on the same course (at the same time) as world-class athletes that are internationally known? I will always make the Philly Tri part of my Tri calendar.

  • Comments: A great race! It's well run and is a pretty good course. I don't think I have any real complaints. There were a lot of athletes and more this year than last year. The course was a little crowded, but not awful. I'd do this race again. It was also great to race with our friends. When we were standing in line at the port-o-potties before the swim start, I said that I couldn't imagine doing these races by myself.

  • Comments: Surprisingly, I thought the bike course was better this year than last. Although I still think it would be better with a few hundred less participants. I do enjoy this race and have done it each of its first five years. Thought I might be done after this one, but now I'm thinking maybe I'll make it for Round 6.

  • Comments: I guess for the amount of training I put in I placed about as well as I cvould for 5 weeks training. I will go back next year for sure as I know that I am capable of doing wayyy better! Great race, it is well organized great bike course through philly( next year i will be ready for the hills). I had the goal of finishing under 3 hours which I did, so I guess I am kinda happy about it

  • Comments: DNF Not long into the swim I began feeling a tightness in my chest, like I was unable to get enough air. I did some breaststroke and turned on my back a few times, but it got steadily worse until I had to head for a kayak. After a long rest I tried again, but ended up having the same problem and swam to another kayak. I told them I was done and they called a boat that came and got me, and eventually a woman swimmer who was coughing up blood. Once I got back I realized I was also coughing up frothy blood. It continued for several hours after the race was over. When I got home, a google search turned up plenty of information on swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE). The frothy blood is a sure sign. It's funny that the woman and I were both sidelined by the same thing. If the life guards wouldn't have made a big deal about her coughing blood, I wouldn't have thought much of it.
