  • Comments: The race was OK. Pretty congested in parts of bike and run for a half IM (in my opinion). The road conditions on parts of the run could have been improved for the race. Some road kill on the bike and run could have been removed - aren't we all feeling ill enough at this point in the race? Offer more shade post-race. Aside: I just want to be clear that I'm pleased with how this race turned out. My reports tend to be on the critical side but that is how I develop and learn. I trained hard for this race, primarily. I found a new lifestyle and am in the best shape I've been in in 10 years. I met some of the BT'ers this past weekend and am impressed with their attitudes, comradely , and talents. Now I just need to find out what is next in the wake of my wife threatening to pull her sponsorship. I've got to get an IM in soon!

  • Comments: Gee, 5430 sports really puts on a good event. Absolutely awesome. I was having a fabulous day until lap two of the run. Then life went to hell in a handbasket. Oh well. I've told Mike this is my last race of the season. Time to regroup and get the knee healthy. BUT...I did win the bet. I did the HIM the day after the 10k swim! NEVER bet with me...you're guaranteed to lose!

  • Comments: Did a little faster than what I thought although I was hoping to go under 6 hours. Overall I was surprised with how much of the race I felt good for. It was only the last 3/4 of the bike & run that felt really hard. Considering this time last year my longest run:~3 miles, bike: ~30 miles, swim ~1300m. It's hard not to compare myself to other people I know who are much faster but overall I ran the race I wanted and I'm happy to have a respectable time for my 1st HIM and feel good doing it.

  • Comments: One thing that upset me on the run was that several of the aid stations were hidden around corners and I kept trying to take a gel before I got there only to have the aid station sneek up in me so that I couldn't wash down the gel with water. That's the only complaint I could think of.

  • Comments: Two things. First, if you're going to send out an email that says to respect the neighbors and not pee alongside the road, put some frickin portapotties on the bike course. There were none. Peeing I have no problem doing on the road, but in the beginning when I was bloated and having GI issues I was looking for them more for comfort of knowing they were there if needed. Fortunately that worked out okay. Also, the run course mile markers were weird. Not all the miles were marked and basically nothing for the second lap. Given the organization of the other two events, this is something I'd expect to be right on.

  • Comments: I raced my plan. I knew I would either do it or not on the run, but I stuck to the game plan. All in all I was 8 minutes off my goal - 8 min slower on the run (although if I had been 5 minutes faster on the run, I still would have been pleased!) I was faster on the swim and almost dead on on the bike (really dead on considering my problems mounting and dismounting...) I have to say I am happy over all and I now have a benchmark for this race.

  • Comments: Looking at my overall time, I can't say I'm all that disappointed. I basically expected to go somewhere between 5 and 5:30, and I was smack in the middle. Nevertheless, it's tough to feel good about a race where I wanted to vomit and then curl up and sleep with 4 miles left to run. Just felt aweful. However, it makes me want to train and get better at the endurance/pacing races for next season. Needless to say, I have a lot of room for improvement on my running.

  • Comments: Wow! What a great race! Barry gave away great prizes and I ended up bringing home a Visor, for doing the race, an extra shirt from the series, a case on gatorade endurance, they were giving them away. And a bow of harvest power bars. Great event and well run! Way to go Barry and Jodie.

  • Comments: This is one very cool race. It was sort of fun to be passed by younger athletes all day long. Felt sort of like that old Frogger game, and I'm glad to have avoided being road kill. I'm pleased to have finished Barry's entire 5430 series, and to meet my goals for each race (Sprint under 1:30, Olympic under 3:00, and Half under 6:00). I'm a bit worried that if I keep doing this triathlon thing, other people my age are really going to have a great advantage over me when I quit to take up checkers, as they're really getting much more practice. At the end of the day, this really is an amazing triathlon series, and I will encourage anyone interested in signing up for these things next season.
