Pre-race routine:

Got up showered. Grabbed a gatorade and Marathon Bar at Wawa. Drove about an hour to the race with girlfriend. Set up transition area. Went to warm up in the water but they announced it was time to exit the area for pre-race instructions
Event warmup:

none really bc of lack of time and me putzing around
Swim
  • 17m 8s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

for me this was a great swim. It was more than 4 mins faster than last year. The amount of time I am spending in the pool is paying off.
What would you do differently?:

I went out way too fast for the first few minutes. Stood up for a few seconds, gathered myself and then continued to swim. Did not start out swimming my race and was worried about pacing with those around me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

took a little longer than I had hoped to get my socks on. I took my time eating a GU knowing that my water for the bike was only half full bc I forgot my lufa for the aero drink at home
What would you do differently?:

dried my feet off quicker so the socks would have went on easier.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 10s
  • 29 miles
  • 22.26 mile/hr
Comments:

forgetting my lufa for the drink did not help bc it was hot I def needed more than just about 16oz of gatorade for the bike- ran out w about 30-40 mins left in the race. Computer for bike was very erratic. It did not log about 20 minutes of the ride. I was not sure of my speed for various segments of the ride. Did majority of the race based on how I felt instead of watching the computer, kind of liked it.
What would you do differently?:

if I wanted to take this race more seriously, I would not have trained as much as I did this week. Weekly training included a 14 mile run Monday, 70 mi bike on Friday and speed work for both the bike and run during the week (total of~ 12 hours from previous Sun to Sat).

Would have loved to have more fluid during the ride...dumb mistake
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

maybe the best transition I have ever had in triathlon. Ran out to the bike course while putting on race belt.
Rank #14
What would you do differently?:

grabbed a GU and some Gatorade for the run bc of the lack of fluids on the bike
Run
  • 31m 5s
  • 4.2 miles
  • 07m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

legs were beat coming out of T2. was surprised I held the pace I did. I am fairly certain that I ran declines, but do not know my mile splits
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

grabbed some gatorade and chocolate cake at post race tent. Saw friends come across the line and we headed to the lake to cool off. stretched for a few minutes. got to watch Christine cross the line

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hydration on the bike.
no tapering- hardest training week this year bc focus is more on Iron Man training

Event comments:

-all of us had great races to open the season, esp considering the heat vs the weather over the past month. It has been much cooler.
-volunteers were great asking if you preferred water or gatorade as you approached and then making sure they had it ready for you.
- T1 moved to parking lot from the sand. Great improvement from last year.
- run course was very well marked.
cops did a great job with traffic
