Pre-race routine:

Woke up a bit later than usual as my phone (which I use as my alarm clock) ran out of charge. Had a cup of tea and a bit of oatmeal on the drive to the race site. Set up transition and chatted with some tr
Event warmup:

Ran about half a mile and swam maybe 200 meters.
Swim
  • 19m 47s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Kicked in the head once near the start of the swim, but fortunately my goggles stayed put. Got into a rhythm fairly early and kept a nice stroke through the whole course. Didn't stray off course once, which is a big accomplishment for me. Overall a really positive swim.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on balancing my stroke and getting the full potential out or every stroke.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Good job wetsuit strippers. No issues in T1.
Bike

  • 22.20 mile/hr
Comments:

It was a bit windy and slightly hilly so I felt a bit sluggish for much of the bike. I planned to eat a power bar in preparation for IM Kansas 70.3, but had trouble getting my HR down at the beginning of the bike. So, I decided just to drink Gatorade on the ride. It may have affected the end of my run. I took it relatively easy on the coure b/c my hamstring has been hurting, so I was happy with my overall time considering my effort. Have to remember that mindset in the future.
What would you do differently?:

Not hurt my hamstring, focus on relaxing coming out of transition. I would plan to eat 15 minutes into the ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Rode on top of my shoes for a bit longer than I needed to.
Run
  • 42m 20s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a really fast first 5 miles, which I attribute to taking it easy on the bike. Somewhere around mile 5 my hamstring started to get tight. I took it easy the last mile or maybe mile and a half. Overall I'm happy with this run and would have been at a 6:30/mile pace if my hammy didn't get tight.
What would you do differently?:

More calories and maybe salt on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate pizza, and hung out with family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hamstring

Event comments:

Great venue, and has the potential to be one of my favorite races.
