Pre-race routine:

Drove out early after having a bowl of raisin bran. Ate a bar and sipped Gatorade in the car. Laced 'em up and headed out. Hit the head and then was in Corral A about an hour before start time.
Event warmup:

Didn't really do any. I walked around, but am not a big fan of extensive running warm ups before slowish runs like this distance. I basically sat on a curb and watched people file in. It seemed like I was a bit out of place about 2/3 back in the Corral A when the 1:40 pace guy set up shop right next to me. I'm not that guy.

Another random thing. I was bib #1416. The girl who sat down next to me was bib #1415. What are the chances?

Comments:

I started out feeling pretty good. I was pretty worried about my training coming in. I was about 3 weeks into a 10 week plan when my third child was born. Training, and particularly distance training, stopped for about 5 weeks. I picked it back up again with a couple weeks to go, but too little too late I was afraid.

In any event, the legs felt strong for the first 5 miles, and only slightly degraded after that mile by mile. I was hitting my splits for the first 9 or 10 miles, but at mile 10 the wheels fell off the wagon.

I've read about "bonking," but don't think I've done it in a race until now. I suddenly got very hungry and then the legs got wobbly on me. I basically lost it just before getting to the Big A. I started a jog walk regime, but I couldn't hold pace. Lost a minute per mile at mile 10, then a couple minutes per mile by the end.

I really, really wanted to beat the 2 hour mark, but failed. I think this might be one of those that I'll second guess myself on. At the time, I concluded around mile 11 that 2 hours was hopeless. I wonder if I was wrong if I gut it out more. Part of me says I did well given my limited training, particularly without having done long runs for 5 weeks, but then again...
What would you do differently?:

Not schedule a race just before my wife is due to give birth. On the one hand, I did it purposefully to keep myself from totally not working out. In that sense, it was a success. I at least tried to do something during the downtime when the sleep-less haze that is a new child permitted itself.

On the other hand, I was set up for failure to some degree. My goal at the start of this was a finish of 1:52ish. I downgraded that to 2 hours when my training didn't happen. Then I still missed the mark.
Post race
Warm down:

Just snacked, took a picture and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited run training, particularly beyond 3 miles per pop. I loved the 3 day per week training plan I started out on though.

Event comments:

Very well run race. Lots of stuff going on. Very entertaining. Obviously, Disney knows how to handle thousands of people at a time. I would definitely do this one again.
