Pre-race routine:

Drove over the got checked in. A little pissed that they ran out of medium shirts. Meet up with the Blackmons and Spanglers for dinner. Saw Rell too.

Normal wakeup routine pre-race: coffee, oatmeal, shower, sun screen, a visit to the throne.

Once at the site, got my bike ready fast and went down to watch the other waves start.

Going into this race, I was not taking it seriously at all. The only thing on my agenda was to test out some nutrition. I decided that I'd use 1 bottle of Infinit on the bike. 258 calories and 291 mg of sodium. Plan was to take 3 sips every 15 mins. At 19-20 miles till the end, I would hold off.

Event warmup:

Did about 400 yards of strides just to get warmed up.
Swim
  • 34m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Watching the other waves go off, I knew we would be fighting the current. 34 mins though? We had about 200 down strong current, 150 across the current, then about 800 up the current. This literally felt like I was swimming 2 miles. Brutal.

Thought I might take off to avoid the mix from the start, but the group had different ideas. Most blew up after the turn and I was soon into the wave ahead of me.

At the final turn, I was pushed way down stream and kept trying to sight for the swim exit. By the time I got close to the shore, I was having to swim back up stream.

Brutal.

Standard stuff here.

Comments:

Plan was to just hammer the bike which I did. Nutrition seemed to work pretty well on first loop. On the second loop, I could tell that I was starting feel full.

Transition 2

Run
  • 54m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

As soon as I started the run, I had the most intense painful cramps. No nasuea though. I think I just took in too many calories. I did 2 gels in Chattanooga and I had a small bit of cramping then. I walked the aid stations and walked a few times here and there during the first 2 miles.

Dollar, Blackmon and Lisa Marshall passed me like a freight train and told me to HTFU in their own ways.

Finally by about mile 3 I was able to run for real with no cramping.

Post race
Warm down:

Laying down and lots of it.

Event comments:

Pretty good venue. Very spectator friendly bike course. Run course was short. Swim maybe should have been reversed.
