Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 ate bagle with pb&j. Hit the road at 5:00. Took one and a half hrs to get to the race. This time of the year I hate driving early in the dark bc. tons of deer out and about but only saw a few of them. At one point I had to lock the tires up briefly due to a fallen tree. It had been cut up but with the mess I wasn't sure and I didn't see it until late bc. dark and raining pretty hard at that point. Anyway now that I got my heartrate up I am ready to go.
Event warmup:

Met up with my friend Dave and ran around the parking lot to warmup.

Comments:

After IMOO I have not been doing much for training. Mainly just a few mild efforts and had no intention on racing until the spring. My pal Dave told me about this race and I pulled the trigger 5 days before the race. This is the first year and I don't know the area well but knew it wouldn't be flat.
We should have started closer to the front bc. narrow road so took a long time to thin out where you could get up to speed. Nothing more anoying than going downhill and doing 12 min miles. I kept reminding myself not to push, stay with my bud and enjoy the day. At about 3 miles I realized I had overhydrated and so did he. So we pealed off and visited the trees. He stopped first so when I finished I just headed off on my own. The run is out and back which is nice bc. you are never really alone but the turn around was at the bottom of a rather steep hill so that sucked.
The races I usually do are the ones that the RD promises are "flat and fast". This is not one of those races. It was nonstop up or down. I don't recall any flat areas that are worth mentioning. The second half I decided to run it out and picked up the pace. My legs were really feeling the pounding on the downhills but I kept pushing. I was passing a lot of people and not getting passed which is always nice but I knew it was too late to post a good time. Up the last hill and sprint to the line. Walked it out and cheered Dave to the line. He had a great day and I was glad to do it with him. We got lucky in that there was just a little mist for the time of the race. On my drive down I had no idea what the weather was going to be. I knew we wouldn't melt but sucks to run in wet/heavy shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Not race without training for it but all in all it was a nice day just a lousy finish time.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Dave's family that was there and had a little to eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Out of shape

Event comments:

For those looking for a challenge or love hills this is the race for you. Being the first time they have some bugs to work out like the turn around where the full marathoners seperate was a bit of a cluster. Also unless I missed it there wasn't any post race to speak of, Just bananas and plain bagles for grub. May have left too soon but I had to get home to make sure my son didn't burn the place down. The swag bags were good with long sleeve shirt, winter hat and gloves and a nice finishers medal. But the shirt is huge.
