Pre-race routine:

I was very excited for this event as this is my first real experience with road racing and transitions. Did not sleep at all last night. Woke up at 1:30, 2:15, and 3:30. Fell asleep until alarm went off at 4:30 am. Ughhhhh. Thankfully everything was packed and ready. Stomach had been bothering me a bit the past couple days. Ate some oatmeal, swigged some Pepto. I did this event as the team Relay, so my buddy Josh was meeting me here at 5:15. Loaded his stuff up, met our other two friends Doug and Melissa down the road, and we were off. Easy 45 minute ride to Glastonbury
Event warmup:

Checked in, dropped off bike etc in transition, scoped out some really cool bikes, and watched someone get a 2 min. penalty before the race even started for having their bike in the wrong rack!! Ouch. It was pretty chilly this morning, somewhere about 50 degrees and overcast, with a mist at the start of the first 5k. i did a 10 minute jog with some friends, but that really did me no good becasue i was just doing the bike leg of this Du, and had to wait 20 minutes for my partner to get into transition.

Comments:

I had no way to really warm up in transition, waiting for partner. My legs actually hurt for the firt mile trying to warm up on the bike. But after that, I felt great. I definitely felt like I put in my best effort. I was shooting for an 18mph avg, and finished with 18.7 per the Garmin. Very happy about that. Me and another cyclist were actually battling back and forth, which made it fun. I would actually blow by him on the flats, and he'd catch me every time on a climb. That clearly tells me where I need to work. On one of the longer flats, I was holding pretty steady at 24mph+. I did end up passing him with 2 miles to go. Overall I passed about 5-6 riders, and got passed by a whole lot more!! I even passed a 6 month pregnant women!!!! :)

What would you do differently?:

Find a better way to warm up. Although, I will be doing this event alone next year. It was fun as a team relay, but I felt I could have finished this without a problem. Not super fast, but I could've finished.

Comments:

I only had to hand off the runners number bib. Here is how you can tell I am a newbie. There was a fuel belt/strap in our packet, and I thought they were just handing those out. I had no idea we could have used that for our bib. So our tranition time could have been quicker, since we had safety pins to exchange.

Warm down:

My legs were pretty tired immediately after racking my bike. But that subsided pretty quickly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More time in the saddle. I just bought a bike in February, so overall, not too upset with my performance.

Event comments:

I have to say, this event seemed so organized. There were volunteers all over the place. Cops/volunteers at all intersections and turns, holding traffic etc. I don't think they could have done a better job.

What was more impressive, was the talent of some of these triathletes/runners. I got passed by several men, women, old, young etc on the bike, all on Tri bikes. You guys/gals can fly!!! It was cool to see some of the high end Tri bikes some people have, and how seriously competitive they are. Very cool first experience for me.

I am quite sure we finished 2nd in Team Relay. No hardware for that, but nice to get a 2nd (still waiting for official results, but pretty sure that's where we finished). The leading team's runner had the Age Group (30-34) National Champion for Du's, and a very serious rider. the rider was the only guy in transition spinning away on a trainer, for at least 60 minutes, before the race even started. Funny thing was, he was paying so much attention to his time etc on the trainer, as his running partner was coming in, I had to mention "is this your runner coming in". He says " Oh yeah" And had to scramble to get the bike off the trainer. he then proceeded to post a pretty amazing bike time. Nice job Mr Aero Helmet, Silver Viser guy. He was actually a nice guy to talk to.

Unfortunately, my friend had to get back to town pretty quickly for a birthday, so we grabbed a bagel/banana/water, watched our friends finish, and bailed.

Smooth, other than a very short section that recently had been milled. the course was changed during the week due to other roads being milled.
