Sunny
Total Time = 3h 28m 24s
Overall Rank = 118/140
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/4
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5. Oatmeal, banana, coffee. Stretched. Left home at 6am. (1hr drive)
Event warmup:

5 min run, 5 min bike, just in the water enough to get the wetsuit wet.
Swim
  • 38m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

The first couple hundred yards were the hardest. Just had to remind myself to relax, breathe, and settle in. Tried drafting a little, but had to pass that swimmer. Didn't find any feet after that.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

That wetsuit was stuck like glue. I did put body glide on my ankles and wrists, but it didn't seem to help. This transition felt slow.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 51s
  • 25 miles
  • 17.07 mile/hr
Comments:

20 oz. water & 16 oz. of heed (I had 24 oz. of heed with me, but I didn't get it all down. 2 gels.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I would make sure to finish both bottles of water/heed, especially given the hot weather.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Couldn't believe how careless people are with their stuff. There was a wetsuit right in the path where we needed to run. Someone racked their bike right on top of my stuff. In general, there was shit everywhere.
Run
  • 1h 18m 5s
  • 6.31 miles
  • 12m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Had all my positive thoughts going and was looking forward to a slow steady run. But, within the first 1/4 mile I started having cramps in my right quad. Tried walking, but it didn't help. Was forced to stop and stretch. This went on for a bit and then the left quad started cramping too. I was hobbling along, walking, stretching, jogging a little for the first 2.5 or 3 miles. Drank as much as I could get my hands on at each aid station. Luckily there were people in the neighborhood out with garden hoses. That was sooooo awesome. The cramping was under control by the half way point, but I continued the walk/jog thing throughout the race. Ugh. I also carried a 10oz bottle of heed on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Might try salt supplement on the next race of this distance, and drink more on the bike. Interesting thing is I finished with the same overall running pace as my last race (5.1 mi.)
Post race
Warm down:

Went and sat in the lake with some other racers. That felt so good and it was nice to just sit and visit. Most of them were also doing their first oly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Same as always, my newness to running. I'm gaining, but I just need more work. The heat was a factor. The actual temp. was 90 and the heat index at the end of the race was 100.

Event comments:

I found out after the race that there were only two "official" water stations on the run. The others were just locals doing a good deed and I'm sure glad they did.
