Pre-race routine:

Tried to wake up and get ready as quietly as possible so not to wake the baby. Unsuccessful. Had to put her in bed with the in laws to get her to go back to sleep. Hopped in the car and drove over from Dallas where we stayed with some relatives.
Event warmup:

Got into the noratorium as quickly as possible. Didnt even want to warm up in the pool because I knew I would be freezing waiting in line. In others words, not much of a warm up.
Swim

Comments:

I have made really great strides in my swimming since starting to train for my first triathlon 4 months ago. The set up did not allow me to show what time I really couldve gotten. It started off great and I passed about three people in the first 150m. But it was not easy to pass with the set up. I came to a fourth person to pass and could not get around his zig zaggin. THen there was a big bunch about 25m from the ladder that cost much more time. In training I probably swim about 1:40 to 1:45/100m. But I see that everyone else had the same problems and I was very excited to see 8th out of my age group for my first swim!
What would you do differently?:

I did find some good things to work on. One major one is sighting. When I came up behind someone I noticed that I was not prepared to sight while continuing my stroke like I saw some of the other more experienced swimmers do. I know this will be important in open water swims in the future and plan to practice this in upcoming training sessions.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

I did not put alot of emphasis into getting out quickly in T1. I havent practiced it very much and never done it before. I do not have bike shoes and had to put on both socks and shoes. And wanted to make sure and remember everything I needed to keep warm. Man it was cold.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely need to practice this alot more.
Bike
  • 50m 44s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.19 mile/hr
Comments:

My cateye had this at 12.8 miles. I really was hoping to average 15 mph. I thought I was on pace for that and my cateye had me at 14.9 mph average. They had me at 14.2. I will say I was pretty close to my goal so I am happy with it. Being my first race, and actually seeing how fast people are in person amazes me. I have much to learn.
What would you do differently?:

I am going to continue to volume build, but at the same time try and learn a little bit more about cycling. To be honest, I know little to nothing even after training for 4 months. I just went out and road for the amount of time that BTs plan told me to and didnt put much thought into it. I need to change this and improve.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

This felt really funny with the cold. Legs felt strangely numb and just weird all around. I though I would be pretty quick out of this transition because I didnt have any shoes or gear to change out. Just a hoodie. But once I got off my bike my body told me to take it easy and get some bearings. I did quite a few bricks off the bike so I felt prepared, but I think the cold threw in another factor I wasnt prepared for. So I took it easy and adjusted.
What would you do differently?:

Not too sure what I could have done differently but pushed a little harder.
Run
  • 31m 3s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I was a slow runner, but I feel like I could have pushed a little harder. I was just scared to poop out. I felt good and kept my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Worn a watch. What a dummy I am. But before the race I decided not to because I figured I just wanted to finish. But it would have been nice to see how I was doing at the half way point. And to get a good idea of when I could start pushing towards the end. As a result I went across the finish line with a lot left in the tank.
Post race
Warm down:

Put on sweatshirt. Grabbed some water and turned in my chip.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold. Lack of preparation. Lack of knowledge. Looking forward to getting better.

Event comments:

I dont have anything to compare this too, but things seem to go pretty smoothly for there being 700 plus participants. I would definitely consider doing this one again next year to end my season if travel plans allow. People were very friendly and helpful. They need to change the swim
