Swim
Comments: Pretty good swim. Water temp was better than I thought it would be. I was surprised when I got down to the water to hear "Ladies, 30 seconds". So there was not time to think about how cold the water would be. I just had to jump in and start to swim. I was not at the line when the gun went off, but that was OK. I am BOP swimmer so I had good water. Forgot how to swim the first 5 minutes just due to being excited about the race, but after that got into a rhythm. I was so surprised when I realized somebody was actually drafting off me! Got a little cold in the hands and feet about 2/3rd of the way through. What would you do differently?: Remember how to swim when the gun goes off! I would try the neoprene booties. Transition 1
Comments: Long run into transition. I walked some of it because my feet were so cold and the rough concrete hurt. Slow transition. It was cold, so I put on arm warmers and a cycling jacket. What would you do differently?: Maybe use the shoe drop when out of the water. I could have jogged faster on the rough concrete. Bike
Comments: I have never biked in this much rain. I just slowed down and took it easy. Better to finish than to splat in the rain. Heard there was a lot of accidents. My toes started to get cold about 1/4 way through and my core got a little cold at 1/2 way, but I finished it. When I dismounted I felt wobbly. I realized running my bike in that I could not feel my feet. What would you do differently?: nothing. I could have biked a little harder, but in the rain I didn't want to take a chance. Transition 2
Comments: Still slow, I didn't take off the jacket or the arm warmers, but I drank a little. I felt like my socks were rolled under my feet because there were so cold. But I double checked and the socks were fine. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: I was just slow. About every 100m on the run, there was a 6 foot ankle deep puddle. The shoes never dried out. (I thought the swim was over LOL!) I was just tired and the cold just sapped me. I was happy though! I jogged the whole thing. My quads and lower back hurt a lot for the last mile and 1/2 but I made it. My first Olympic tri finished!! WOO-HOO! What would you do differently?: I was drinking Infinit Go Far on the bike and run. I usually only use 1 scoop for a bottle and drank one bottle on the bike and 1 on the run. I think I needed more. The liquid amount was OK, but I would increase to 1.5 scoops to feel a little better on the run. Post race
Warm down: I gave it all I had. Went to the med tent and got a mylar blanket. Ate good BBQ sandwiches and cookies. I meandered to the timing tent and looked up. So surprised that I won 3rd place Athena!! I missed the awards because I didn't think about getting anything, but I went to the podium and got my medal, a pair of Blue Seventy goggles, and a box of power bars. So Cool!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: I needed a little more go far in my bottles for bike and run. The cold and constant rain was a huge factor. Event comments: Loved the race. The course markings are awesome -- arrows on the pavement before, during, and after turns as well as signs. The volunteers were awesome. Will definitely race with Rev3 again! Got up, was glad I put the number tattoos on the night before. Ate a bagel with a little cream cheese. Headed out to transition.
Putting on the wetsuit, walking from transition to start of swim.
