Run
Comments: This was the first time I did this race, and it was tougher than I thought. Little River is only 20-25 minutes from my house. Where I live is as flat as can be. I can see 5-7 miles in any direction. But we had serious hills in this race. I started out with five people behind me. I slowly, very slowly, passed a few others. I had to walk a couple times. The first time was going down hill near a cow pond. There were holes all over the place, and I was sure if I wasn't careful, I would end up stepping in one of those holes and messing up something. The second time I walked was up a steep grassy hill. They had kind of flattened the grass in the pasture where we were running, but it was still tough going, and climbing, in the grass, against 25 mph winds was brutal. The girl in front of me was "running," but I was keeping up with her just by hiking. Not surprisingly, I ended up passing her once we crested the hill. So we ran on just about every surface imaginable. There weren't any water crossings, but it was obvious on one section that flood waters came through there routinely. The wheel ruts were deep and a little difficult to navigate. All in all, I was pretty happy. I was hoping to come in at about an hour, and I missed that by 6 minutes, which is quite a bit slower than I was planning. But the course was also tougher than I thought it would be, and my legs were still a little tired from the week before. What would you do differently?: Not walk at all. Well, except for the tricky part by the cow pond. Post race
Warm down: Got Gatorade and a banana. Just as I was getting settled, hubby and Jayson came into town. We went in to eat at Fat Boyz, and I ran out just for the 10k award ceremony to pick up my little medal. Even though I've been trying to eat a plant based diet, I had some rib eye at Fat Boyz. Oh, man. They get their beef from the organic grocery store next door, and it is just amazing. Yummy. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of hill training. Event comments: Fun race. Little River is a cute little town, with the brick road and the well kept main street. The city of 600 people is really proud of this race, and I wish more people would come run it. Between the 5k and 10k, they had a little over 100 runners total. The course is challenging, the crowd is great, and you can get a delicious steak and a beer at Fat Boyz after, even if it is only 10:30 a.m. :-) The over all male and female winners each get a plaque with a cow chip on it. I attached a picture because I think it's one of the things that makes this race fun. I did have to dodge quite a few cow chips running through the pasture. Last updated: 2013-05-22 12:00 AM

Made oatmeal and coffee, got my pink on, and headed up to Little River. I hadn't registered yet, so I needed to get there 30 minutes before the 8:30 start. Made it with 15 seconds (maybe) to spare.
After registering, going pee, and getting myself organized, I had about 10 minutes before race time, so I did some light running. Fortunately, that got some things moving, so I visited the ladies' room once more, just a few minutes before start time. Perfect.
