Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:45a and light breakfast of yogurt and banana. Drank coconut water on way to race. Pam and I parked just north of Bellin off of Irwin. Arrived at 7:00a.
Event warmup:

Walked the 4-5 blocks to the race start area. Back was feeling surprisingly good for the first time in a week so I thought I would be able to run some (all?) of the race. Pam saw a race number 13,xxx so we knew it was going to be record breaking attendance. Approx. 20 minutes to 8:00a we started to line up in the start area between 9:00 mm and 10:00 mm.

Comments:

Absolutely perfect conditions - 60 degrees with under 5 mph breeze from teh SM and sunny. Of all the races I've done, this was the one with the best weather. It was also the most crowded one with a solid stream of runners until mm 3 when it cleared out somewhat. Pam and I agreed to run easy for the first mile to see how my back and her leg were doing. The first milw was tough with my calf muscles very tight and concern about a charleyhorse. Thing got better after the first mile so we forged ahead. We took advantage of all water stops and walked through and a little after. Also walked for a couple of stretches after mm 4 and 5. Was able to run the whole race and we ran it togther which was the first time we've done that. It was great that we could share the experience. Pam beat her 2006 Bellin time by several minutes and I was just happy that I could run it.
What would you do differently?:

Not much in consideration of my back issue. I was 90% certain on Friday that I would need to walk it.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a bit. Had water and a frozen energy popsicle. Skipped the food since it was SO crowded in the race end area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My back- I know that I will be able to do much better when feeling 100%.

Event comments:

The number of participants definitely made this less than a perfect race. There is a trade off of quantity vs. quality. The souvenir time chip is neat. We felt bad that there was no medal for finishers. I don't know how many more people they can handle before this is just too big-- maybe that's already happended. Again, the best part of this race was being able to run it with Pam and finish together (actually she beat me by 1 second). When we got home, Joanie had made each of us a banner which was really nice. It was a very good day!
