Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 4:30, make 2 pbj eat 1 pack 1. Wake up V and load up the car for the 1hr trip to the race site. Get to transition and setup everything.
Event warmup:

Some light stretches. Sprinting to the Nat barefoot once I left my warmup pants and running shoes at transition. Holy crap it was cold.

Comments:

This was an inauspicious start for me. I went in too fast and lost my nose clip and pushed my goggles off of my eyes. I managed to get the goggles back on sorta, and continued from there. The real loss was my nose clip, I got water back in my sinuses every now and then and it interfered with my breathing even more than usual. First 250 went pretty well I passed 1 person and was not passed at all, then I started gassing. I, for whatever reason, swallow a lot of air when I swim. This then builds up and makes it even harder to breathe. At the 250 mark it was all I could do to get breath, I almost chummed the water but held back for 2 reasons. 1 It's just not very nice. 2 All the people after me would have known who did it and would have had extra incentive to sprint to the transition area to say HI. All in all, time wasn't too bad but next time I will find a way to not swallow air while swimming. I probably could have trimmed 20-30 seconds off of my time.
What would you do differently?:

Breathe with lungs not stomach.
Transition 1
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

"F me, it's cold" Sounded like a college belching contest as I finally started getting rid of the air in my belly. For the 1st minute every step was accompanied by it's own chorus.

Toweled off some and got a long sleeve shirt on. Lost a sock under my towel.
What would you do differently?:

better organization
Bike

Comments:

This was my most improved event over TexasMan earlier this year. The course was conducive to good downhill speeds and flats off of the down hills rather than just straight up hill. I held a good pace most of the way. Gotta work on climbing. I acutally passed a couple of people so that was a good experience. 1 med hill and 1 larger hill kept my pace down. and did you know that after a certain point, being cold actually feels like a burn? wind chill on the legs was a stone cold (pun intended) beyotch.
What would you do differently?:

HILLS HILLS HILLS! gotta practice hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Decent transition not too much to say here.
What would you do differently?:

eh.

Comments:

I thought I did better than TexasMan but the times show different. I could have sworn I ran more but I guess I walked slower to make up for it. Easily my worst event. Gonna have the doc look at my right knee in a couple of weeks. I had enough in the tank to run at the end at a faster pace than i can normally hold for a distance. That was FUN. I have to get back to the point where I can maintain more than a plodding pace. That drains me more mentally than physically. If I can make it Fun again, who knows next year maybe an MOP?
What would you do differently?:

Roller Blades? Wheelies?
Post race
Warm down:

Sun was up and warm by the time I got there. So I talked to Jess (Fellow BTer Thanks for the Tamales) and kissed the wife (not in that order). Hope to meet more fellow BTer's next time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me.

Event comments:

I train with Tom (RD) and I like him, but come on don't reuse the previous race numbers. I ended up with the Karen Smyers TexasWoman bib. The entry fee for the race wasn't any cheaper, so we should get the appropriate bibs. Otherwise call it the Everything Must Go Triathlon.
