Pre-race routine:

Since this was a closer venue, I was able to sleep in my own bed and travel up race morning. I think that helped, but I still only got about 4.5 hours of sleep since I got to bed late. Woke up at 0430 and ate some oatmeal, did not have protein shake like I usually have in the morning. At the race site, 45 min prior had a gel, than another 15 min prior to my race start.
Swim
  • 05m 35s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

What a crappy swim. I really need to practice and learn how to breathe. The first couple/few laps went ok, but once I messed up my breathing, it was hard to get it back. Got passed by about 3 people in the pool and passed only 2 people, I believe.
I guess this sort of swim performance is average, for me.
What would you do differently?:

Still practice, practic, practice. Unless I find a genie that will grant me three wishes...
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

I think this transition time wasn't that great considering what I had to do. The transition area was very tight. More croweded, not only by the numbered section bike rack but the racks were close together causing jams from other groups. This was a biginner friendly race and lots of people were using mtn bikes and cruisers, unfortunately the bike racks (which are just boxes with tire cutouts) were designed for thin road bike tires.
In all fairness, this is a first time event and hopefully next year's will have a bit more space designated.
What would you do differently?:

Get there a bit earlier and get that end spot!
Bike
  • 38m 25s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Fun bike ride! Had some good racing with a couple people I was close to. Was passed by 3 people, was able to overtake two of them, then was eventually overtaken again by one of them. That was fun!
What would you do differently?:

I think I can still improve on the bike. I probably could have rode harder. With more experience, I'll know what I can push to and still be able to have some in the tank for the run. Overall I'm happy with it.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Only my second tri and this transition was well under a minute! One thing I did differently is get my last drink in before I got off the bike. So I didn't need to get a drink in transition. Also I didn't bother to use my asthma inhaler.
What would you do differently?:

Just need a bit more practice kicking off shoes while removing helmet.
Run
  • 25m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I was a little surprised by this. I felt like I was running only a 9min/mi pace. Was only passed by one runner, who was also 36 y.o.
My calves/shins didn't hurt at all starting the run. But the run felt tiring. I didn't try sprinting towards the end even though I was close enough to overtake someone before the finish. Need to practice sprinting after running that distance.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I can still push harder. It's just tough to know. I don't think I felt as tired after this one as the first tri. More practice and experience should bring additional improvements. Training with a HRM might help, so i can train in the proper zone. I just run by feel right now.
Post race
Event comments:

Well, consider this is only my second event.
Wilmington had a better after race spread for the participants. But this was adequate. It takes me a few minutes anyway before I want to eat anything. For this event there were bananas, apples and oranges, bagels and peanut butter, and drinks.
