  • Comments: Overall, this was an incredible race. Leading up to the event I was a little concerned that I may have picked the wrong event for my first IM and was thinking that I should have done a Ford sponsored event. However, this race exceeded my expectations! The volunteers, the crowd support, the scenery, everything was great.

  • Comments: Vineman was a well run event. I rellay like the cost compared to IM/WTC events. The course is tough and there are some rough roads out there on the bike. Up next Wisconsin. I think that will be my lsat IM for awhile. I will stick with HIM and olympic. Overall an almost 28 minute PR and a success.

  • Comments: volunteers were everywhere: helping with wet suit removal, holding bikes at port-a-johns. every mile was an aid station on the run that was fully stocked with salt tabs, water, gatorade, fruit cookies, shot blocks etc.

  • Comments: I made sure to thank all of the volunteers and the police crews that were out all day and all night. every corner i turned on the bike course i said thank you. all the aid station volunteers i thanked. it was great to have so many people out there, all willing to help and get you whatever you needed.

  • Comments: There are a lot of really great things about this race. It's not terribly crowded. There are a lot of aid stations. The scenery is amazing. The bike course is challenging without being crazy difficult. It's a Team-In-Training race, so there is a lot of energy for the participants out there. The multiple loops on both the bike and run make it easy for your supporters to find you, and ensure that you have other participants around you all the time. The only real downside would be the roughness of the bike course (I've read about some crashes ending peoples' days out there). There's also not much talk on the website about the hilliness of the run course. They provided an elevation profile of the run, but don't really say much about how hard it is. Make sure you preview it before the race so you know what to expect. The sooner the better so you can train on similar terrain.

  • Comments: What a bargain! Great course support. Scenic course with just a few challenging hills on the bike and a much-tougher-than-reputed run. Good post-race food and finisher swag. Point-to-point logistics are a slight challenge, but they certainly give you enough advice to navigate that end of things. Excellent first IM option, especially with their 3-for-the-price-of-2 discount.

  • Comments: I did a real good job exorcising the monkey from my back where he had rested since this race last year. I felt the redemption throughout the race. I raced much more intelligently than I have in the past and it paid off. I was in better shape going into the race last year but racing smart and according to plan worked much better. This is a great race. I really like the course and it is a really well run race.

  • Comments: Truely a well run race. Every turn, every aid station, every detail was right on the money. I would happily do it again, but I want to see other race courses. A simply amazing day. I am sure the reality of the day will not sink in for a while yet, just all smiles.

  • Comments: A beautiful course; the race organizers must have been as surprised by the heat as we were (forecast was for low 80s, not high 90s) and ran out of water and ice at the back of the pack. Definitely a race worth doing; logistics of 2 transition areas made for some complications but it works. Nice to be free of the M-dot hype. These are challenging bike and run courses in any conditions. My two iron distance races have now been in the low 50s with rain and upper 90s. I wonder what it's like in between?

  • Comments: I think the race was well organized and the race course very pretty. I really loved the vineyards, which we visited the next day. I didn’t like that T1 and T2 were separated by 15 miles. Also, there was a shuttle from T1 to T2 I heard, but it wouldn’t transport bikes. So if people didn’t have friends or family driving them (like a buddy of mine who we gave a ride back to the hotel) they would have to take the shuttle back to T1 then hop into there cars, drive back to T2, load their bikes and then drive to a hotel. Otherwise, the volunteers were great; they had plenty of aid stations on the run course offering the things you needed and people would cheer you on a lot, especially when you started running again.

  • Comments: What a great experience. This is truly a spectacular race. Supremely well organized, plenty of volunteers, a truly breathtaking course. Drawbacks (out of the race director's control, clearly) the heat and the pavement condition. But, really... what fun is it if there's nothing to bitch about? I have no idea what the rules are nowadays, the waters being somewhat muddied out there in the river of public opinion as it relates to "have you earned your M-dot?" Are you worthy of the title "Ironman?" I have no idea. I do know for damned sure, I'm a Vineman. I'll be back next year.

  • Comments: Thanks to Amy at Vineman as well as Vineman as a whole for putting on such an amazing event. Only God knows how they were able to keep up with H20 and ice at the aid stations in that heat. Tons of thanks to my dad for being there and being my support on a day where without support I wouldn't be an ironman. Especially post-race I was not much fun. But he did everything in his power to help me recover. I also just got an email from him showing his registration for Ironman Florida 70.3 May 17, 2009. Hell yes dad! Gunna be a fun day! So I hope you enjoyed the longest race report known to man. Has taken me 1.5 hours to write. Now that my goal for the year is accomplished I need a new one.... Clearwater '09 or BUST! I'm going to do another full ironman in 2010.

  • Comments: This is a really neat race. It is challenging, not too difficult but still challenging. I really like the course although it would be a lot better if the roads were in better shape. The RD puts on a good organized race and the crowd was great too. I really was glad to receive all of the encouragement from them during the run. I also really enjoyed the camaraderie that the BOP has. I am normally a ways ahead of them and I had even weeded my way up in the race during the bike but gradually made my way back a ways. Everyone was very encouraging and helpful for each other and I really appreciated that. I would like to do this race again (but would like a cooler day... arggghhh 97 degrees... it was supposed to be 85)

  • Comments: I don't like the logistics. I had to wait around after the end for about 30 minutes to take a bus back to the start to collect my car. I was cold - there were no space blankets. In the morning, they had us park in a dirt lot - pay $5 and said there would be security and the bus would drop us off there in the evening. When I returned, there was no security, the lot was pitch black, and the bus dropped us off 1/4 mile away from teh lot. Also, as mentioned earlier - no gels, little food at the bike aid stations. And not enough bike aid stations. And there was a somewhat hairy intersection on the bike course where there is a highway interchange, and there was no cop on site.

  • Comments: Vineman had small t-shirts available when I finished. That's better than any 70.3 I've done. For a "C student" race, this is a pretty great race. The venue is extraordinary. The weather was uncalled for.

  • Comments: Turns out I got penalized on the bike for riding side by side for a little bit, so my official time is 12:50. But I know how long it took me. 12:44. That’s my time. And I’m happy with it. Florida was 11:50 and pancake-flat. Coming in less than an hour more for an immensely more difficult race – I think I did ok. Vineman commands respect. There’s no way around it. Will I do it again? Probably not. Will I race ironman again? Well…jury’s out right now. As of race day, hell no – never again. But now, looking back over a week later? Don’t be surprised if you see me out there again in a couple of years. But for now, it’s back to normal life. Spending time with those that I love, and trying to give back a little of what I was given for the last year. God knows I couldn’t have finished without it. As for Christina – you couldn’t ask for a better supporter. This race was for you, baby. This race was for us. I love you.

  • Comments: Really liked the layout and the race. Because it it not an M-Dot event, this tends to be a bit smaller than other full length races. There was a bit of a shortage of volunteers (I think because it is a smaller event, and they just ran the 70.3 race here two weeks ago). The vols who were there though were great. Lots of suppport and lots of cheering people. I'd definitely run it again.
