  • Comments: I have to say that the bike course needs to be somehow re-thought. A few things make it very unpleasant and somewhat dangerous in my opinion. 1. Let's face it, this event draws a lot of people who are not comfortable on the bike. They tend to compensate by riding in groups and blocking the narrow space available to pass them. I saw 1 official who might have assessed some penalties to the blockers right in front of me, but none were announced. 2. Letting the mountain bike division start the swim with some of the 40-44 males pretty much insures that some of us will have a tough time navigating the bumps in the parking lot with some rather unwieldy and slow bikes around. Couple this with a decent number of bad riders from other waves and you have a dangerous situation on some rough pavement. I easily lost about a minute today trying to make my way through the narrow spaces between the bumps and the curb. 3. The Trancas intersection on the way back - pedestrians were allowed to cross

  • Comments: I had by far my best overall race - I feel like I actually raced over my head. Aside from a local sprint (Halloween Bash in '09), I RACED an event from start to finish, rather than muddling through the swim, racing the bike, and surviving the run. I finished near the top 25% overall for the first time. I ran in the top half of the field. I finished the bike 89th out of 1559 (top 6%), and 1st among Clydesdales. These things are worth noting because they are such an anomaly. The event was very well run and enjoyable. My one regret is that I didn't take more opportunity to look around and enjoy the beauty of the venue. I was a little too focused. The event was big, fun, and well supported. The organizers and volunteers did a great job. My only criticsim is the parking situation - it was a little chaotic. The event may be a little too big for the venue to accommodate. I realize with the fundraising effort undertaken by the race that they try to get as many participants as possible,

  • Comments: This year the volunteers on the run portion were mostly 12-14 year old kids who really did not want to be there. It showed. Not sure if I'll be back next year.

  • Comments: Fewer big name celebrities in 2011 than is the norm for this race and also fewer big name pros. Nonetheless, this is an excellent opportunity to experience the feel of an "M-Dot" scale race at a (longish) sprint distance.

  • Comments: 17 minute improvement over last year. The race as usual is well run and the crowds never felt like a huge issue (except at the bike mount line). Need more time in the water (technique and navigation) to get me to at least middle of the pack status (19 min 800m should be the target). I didn't let the navigation issues get me down and glad I had some basic race plans in place to fall back on. I think this gives me a lot of confidence for some upcoming races (Playa del Rey, LA Rock and Roll Half Mary) and for 2011 where I would like to add an Olympic distance race to the schedule.

  • Comments: Really unique atmosphere with something of the scale of a typical IM or 70.3. Celebrity participants lend an interesting flavor to the day (which some people find annoying, but I enjoy). Very long sprint race, which makes it a rare race that is appropriate to both experienced and newbie participants. Always nice swag: quality (cotton) t-shirt, embrodered ballcap, and towel, as well as an attractive medal.

  • Comments: In my opinion, the Nautica Malibu Triathlon is a great race for any level of participant. They have ample volunteer staffing, great pre-race, during-race and post-race support, and it's really a fun event. I would recommend it to anyone from beginner to elite. What's not to love about getting to tell people that you did the same triathlon course as Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez? And I BEAT J-Lo! by 16 minutes!!

  • Comments: People complain about the celebrity presence here, but I barely notice it...maybe it comes from having spent many years as an assistant director in the film/TV industry. I honestly appreciate both the attention to fitness that their participation brings and their willingness to get out on the course with both the elites and age groupers in an event like this. This is one of the largest and longest sprints in North America...you will rarely see a triathlon of this scale outside of the Ironman and IM 70.3 series, frankly. So it is a chance to experience some of that scale without having to prepare for those distances. But it is also a long enough race to be challenging on a course accessible to beginners.

  • Comments: First tri under my belt and my wife's. I definitely could have shaved time off the swim and both transitions, but I still came in just about right on my goal (and Liz beat hers, which made for a good day). When Liz decided to go for this and I decided to go along, I didn't know anything about the "world" of triathlon...for instance, that--although Malibu is a "sprint"--this race is longer in all three disciplines than most sprint events. At a more typical sprint, my time would equate to more like a 1:22-1:23, which I feel good about for future events. One side note: Liz and I both did fundraising for the race charity and earned entrance to the post-race "celebrity brunch". One problem: By the time Liz finished (she is a 40+ AGer and started in the 14th and last wave) ALL the food was gone. Because I only just popped my head in the tent to see what they had and went off to wait for Liz to finish, neither of us got any of the brunch. Not a good message to send to older AG athletes

  • Comments: I signed up for this race the day before I left for IM CDA as everyone said to sign up for something to keep myself motivated after I got done with IM. It turns out this was more like a dark cloud hanging over my head than something I wanted to do. I really enjoyed not having a rigid training plan as well as drinking alcohol again :). I also had some weird injuries, such as broken toe, that weren't exercise related to contend with. I think I rode my bike 3 times between IM and this race and ran outside 3 or 4 times. This is a fun day at the beach but it really isn't a race to go and be "serious" at. It is a big party for celebs, local corporations (Disney, Amgen, Dreamworks...), and TNT who all have hundreds of participants. It is a completely different atmosphere than IMNA events (70.3 and IM) which I prefer over the party atmosphere. It is nice as it is a local race only 30 minutes from home so no hotel and very easy for the family to attend and view. I think this is the

  • Comments: Well organised , well marked course , roomy transition area . :) Bike course is a little tight coming out of T1 with the cones and all , Our poor team captain Scott had a bad fall on his bike after hitting a cone. But he got up got cleaned-up by the first Aid people and finished the race, He Rocks ! What a fearless leader. Its a really cool course. The hills make you work hard onthe bike and the run at the end is always a challenge. Thank God its flat !

  • Comments: It was way too Hollywood. People got in the way a lot on the bike start, plus you have to ride down a road with speed bumps, so everyone jams to get to non bump side. Slowed me down, but I happy with this race big time.
