Subject: The Swim
This will be my first post.  Quick background.  Brian from NC, pretty much been 6.2, 200lbs since freshman year (high school) I quit smoking about 18 months ago and blew up to 260.  About 3 months ago I went on a pretty serious diet and am down about 20lbs so far, about 4 weeks ago I decided I wanted to try to do a Tri and have been working towards one on September 19th so only a few weeks to go.  So far my times are about 16 min for the 750 swim, 50 min for the 14 mile bike, and about 33 for the 5k.  I have not done than all back to back though.  It will be interesting.  A quick question about the swim it is pretty much half freestyle and half breaststroke, will I be the only one?  I just cant get enough air with the freestyle.  Thanks for all the advice on here, I have learned a ton just by spending hours looking through all the posts on here.  Thanks again. Brian

you won't be the only one.  plenty of people do a mix of freestyle and breaststroke, especially for their first tri.

just remember to go out there and have fun!

You REALLY won't be the only one - I swear! I did every stroke imaginable to finish my first sprint distance tri: freestyle, little side stroke, some leisurely back stroke and finished off with a classic "shallow-enough-water-to-walk-and-pretend-to-swim-above-water" stroke. That one is patent pending so don't go getting any ideas.

The point is to have fun and relish in the accomplishment and personal satisfaction in knowing you can do it.

Good luck and keep going!!!

Hey Brian, nice to meet you!

Don't worry about it man, your time for the 750 really isn't that bad!

The reason you're sucking wind is coz your lungs probably still haven't regained their full capacity yet... just keep swimming and you'll drop more weight because its so aerobic and your lungs will catch up with you.

When you can complete the 750 all freestyle I reckon you'll be pretty fast! Good luck man! Let us konw if you have any more questions

Hi Brian,  My first tri was a 485 meter swim and I did it almost entirely backstroke and in 16 minutes. I also wasn't the last in my wave out of the water nor was I the only one doing strokes other than freestyle.  I think I did backstroke my entire first year of tris (I had a serious open water swim issue).  You certainly won't be the only one.

Good luck!!!!

Side note:  I go back and do that tri every year and the second year I brought the swim down to 7:30 and all freestyle ;-)

Brian, I practically breaststroke the entire time during my first tri (1000m) because I did not feel comfortable in a wetsuit.  As others have said, you will not be the only one trust me.  Do what you need to do.  Good luck!

Hello

I completed my first race on 16 August.

I started FS and then flipped to BS. Then switched back & forth the rest of the swim.  I was slow but I finished doing FS. Plus I was mixed in the waves behind me so no one cared that I did backstroke.

One thing about BS you can use the swimmers behind you to help keep yourself in-line.  I did get a fewswimmers trying to swim up my legs at the first marker.

You will see everything during the swim.

Dont worry!  Be happy  Have fun! Enjoy!

Great group of people here looking forward to becoming a bigger part of this whole thing. Plus I am sure I am going to be posting up a million more questions as I go along. Thanks again, Brian

Welcome to BT!

You can swim any way you want (that's what "Freestyle" means).  If you're struggling with front crawl (that's the stroke most people use when they can choose), S-L-O-W D-O-W-N.  Let's assume you can swim 50 yards (up and back in a regular pool) in 60 seconds, but then you're gasping for breath and have to swim the next lap breastroke (or hang on the end of the pool for 15 seconds).  Try slowing down to swim that front crawl lap in 66-72 seconds.  Focus on reaching towards the end of the pool every time you put your leading hand in the water.  Focus on r.o.t.a.t.i.n.g to get a breath (it's easy to start lifting your head instead of rotating).  You'll have more time during each stroke to get some air, and start exhaling as soon as your face goes back in the water (I tell people to hum to keep water out of their nose).

Pay attention to what your body is telling you and make the necessary adjustments in speed and intensity in order to safely complete the event.

Your going to do just fine.

Make sure and post your results..
