Subject: Ironman Cozumel? Saw this link on a scuba board i frequent.... http://www.poresto.net/content/view/11771/32/ Supposedly announcing an IM in Cozumel, MX, starting in 11/09. Other than this article, haven't seen anything official. A local friend says it's been quite the talk around town. IM.com doesn't have any press releases or news re: a Cozumel race. Anyone heard anything? |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? No freakin way! This would be sooo awesome.....for me. Kelly and I love diving in Coz and make it once or twice every year. I'm not sure how that island could handle it though. Roads are not very good and are very crowded. Bike course would be tough to manage. Interesting for sure though. I know Trump is looking at developing the East side and dumping tons of dough into the island, maybe this is part of it. |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? Cozumel? The island is like 10 miles all the way around??? You'd have to circle it like 10 times to get 100+ miles on the bike. Obviously it's more than 10 miles... but still... it's a VERY SMALL ISLAND. I love it for diving... but the roads are not that great... it would be a flat, windy course... and the humidity alone would kill me. |

Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? It's about 30 miles long and about 10 miles wide. Yes, if true, will be a loop course, for swim, bike and run I suspect. |

Other than this article, haven't seen anything official. A local friend says it's been quite the talk around town. IM.com doesn't have any press releases or news re: a Cozumel race. Anyone heard anything? Yes and not sure. There has been a group from Mexcio working on getting an Ironman event staged there. One of the things leading up to this was seeing how many people in their own country they could get to participate in an actual Ironman event. They brought around 400 athletes to IM WI last year. Another issue was raising the $$$ which I think I heard they did. The last thing they had to work out was the location. It has to be a location that people from around the world would want to travel to. It would have to have the infra-structure to support the people visiting (hotels, airport access, restaurants and so on). One of the rumors brewing was a spot just on the outskirts of Mexico City, forgot the city name. The race was supposed to be staged in 2009. So the work continues it seems on getting their race down there... While Cozumel sounds nice, I don't think it would be wise. I think we would get dizzy going around in circles on the bike. The roads where ok, it's been a while since I've been there but I think it would cause major havoc for all other tourist that would be visiting the island, especially all those arriving by cruise ship. Hotel wise, I don't remember if they have a big hotel with a lot of rooms or not that's not full during that time frame.

The article basically says that there is ostensibly a 5 year agreement between Ironman and Cozumel for the race. The first race will be in 2009 and will run for at least 5 years. The very first word of the article is "confirmed." Now, the trick is finding out who did the "confirming." The bulk of the article focuses on the difficulty of Ironman, its reputation as one of the toughest sporting tests on the planet and the benefit that this race will provide for Cozumel and its tourism industry. |

Extreme Veteran 361 Dallas, TX (Valley Ranch area) | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? I just got back from Cozumel last Friday. We are divers, and this was a fith trip to the island. The roads were in decent shape and there are plenty of hotels that could host the event. I'm not sure how they would manage the bike course, but it can be done. The southern loop of the island is roughly 35 miles, and another few miles could be added by including the north western portion of the island. A three loop course is certainly doable. The swim would most likely be calm, but not wetsuit legal ... the bike would be warm and windy ... and the run would be hot and humid. I hope it happens. |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? The bike course is confusing me. I suppose I'm easily confused... but it is an out and back? And you do that many times? Why would they not do a loop? Odd. So maybe that's 30 miles out and back? Aren't there just two lane roads over there? I don't recall their being a 4 lane road of sorts... but I haven't been there in 5 years. |

Veteran 266 McAllen, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Cozumel? You do the out-and-back on the bike twice, 56 miles each time. I guess if you do a loop at some point the leaders would be on the run and still many people on the bike and that would make that stretch of road too crowded. |

Regarding the roads, are they recently paved? chip and seal? potholes? You are right about the transition and swim area, thanks for the link.
