Hey gang #1206 checking in. Long time lurker, first time poster and first IM race. Thanks for all the great information. Reading the posts have kept me motivated. Any suggestions on wheels? I was going to use a disc and a 808 front, how bad could the wind be? What about the cornering? I'm not too concerned about the hills, I usually race a disc and I'm a strong cyclist.Looking forward to the race, good luck everybody!Chris

For those that either live in Louisville or have done the course before....if there is going to be wind, in what direction should we be hoping for?

Thank you to those that helped me out with my athlete check in question. Ironman still hasn't responded. Anyway, I didn't get the position so I guess I will be getting to Louisville on Thursday and will stay until Monday. Hope to see everyone there.

I did IMKY in 07 and I can't imagine the water will be that cold. I am very cold natured. From South Georgia and usually carry a sweat shirt everywhere I go, and I am leaving my wetsuit at home. Lets hope that we are still worrying about cool temps by Sunday.

Don't live in Louisville but have done the race and ridden the course a bunch......a NNE breeze would be O.K.   we don't go due North for very long if at all so that would mean no long period of headwind.

Most of the weather sites I have seen are predicting either a NE or NW wind.

This year, we have had a very very unusually cool summer for Louisville.  It never hit the 90 degree mark at all in July ( I think it was a record).  Its been downright chilly here in the mornings this week , and there is a cold front coming in this weekend.  Slight chance of rain on Saturday, and a big cooldown for Sunday.   I'm thrilled for you guys!!

This is my first IM and I was reading the IMKY Guide (for the 5th time).  I noticed the phrase "reflective material on front and back of shoes and shirt".  It got me thinking that I am not sure how much, if any, reflective material adorns my gear.

Black shoes and shorts on the bike and nothing particularly reflective about my bike top.  I wear lights if I ride at night.  Running shoes have reflective material I guess, but not my shorts.  Ummmm.....how strictly is this enforced or interpreted?

Anyone have experience with this?   Might be just nit picky, but they seemed to make a pretty deliberate point about it in the guide.   On the more positive side of things, I hope to be finished by dark

My brain's a bit slow (maybe too much training?) but can you explain how this works on a forum? Does the info come from the Ironman Athlete Tracker? spectators? Is this like Twitter?

Interesting...I'd take 75 and wind, rain or snow versus 90 and humid.  Maybe it's just the summer heat has cooked my brain.

Anyone ever try Gatorade Carbohydrate Energy Formula? It was recommended to me by a friend. I don't think I would ever try something new this close to a race but just curious what people thought of it.

At IM-FL, in the central time-zone and after turning the clock back in October, the sun goes down well before the masses finish, so reflectors and glow-sticks are handed out.  May not be that way in Louisville, but if you're going to be on the run after dark, just stick a couple reflective stickers on the back of your shirt, shorts, shoes, or whatever you'd like.  I've never seen it enforced, but maybe it is.  I just figure it'll help them find my body in the ditch.

Reflective stickers may be sold at the expo - nothing fancy needed.

There will be some reflective dots and strips for sale at the expo. If you plan on finishing at night like me, you just put one on your shirt or hat, front and back. Works great. Cheap, too.

So now that it seems more and more likely that we will be blessed with some good weather, lets move down the list...what are the odds that it will be wetsuit legal?  As of today, the temperature appeared to be 76 degrees.  Is it feasible to think that with lower night time temps and some predicted rain later in the week, that the water temp won't get above 76 degrees?

So, did anyone ever figure out if they are going to abide by the 4.4 USAT rule on wetsuits legal from 78-84 but you are not eligible for prizes?  The athlete guide states: "We use a slightly modified version of the 2009 USAT competitive rules" and then goes on to discuss only bike rule  changes.

I never heard back from Ironman with a true definative answer on this...

Thoughts?

An American Legion conference is going on and elevators are hard to find. I'm on the 3rd floor and can use the escalators. Travel safe, see ya here Jim

River temp. back up to 80.03 @ 8:15pm according to my instruments a mile up river from the start.

timdude - 2009-08-24 6:40 PM

River temp. is down to 79.82 degrees down 1.4 degrees from the 19th. Current is still 0.4 mph.

timdude - 2009-08-19 8:00 PM

Now for some water quality updates, most of these figures are taken just up river at the white water tower you see about a mile from Tumble weed on your left.

Raw water temp. 81.22 degrees.

Turbidity 16.5 very very low, this is great even with all the rain we have had. Should be able to see the giant catfish before they see you.

P.H. 7.68 just like pool water.

The river current is about 0.4 mph slow in my book.

These condition are excellent in my humble opinion, if the predicted air temps hold up we should see alot of PR's. Now this is the Ohio river valley and thinks can change in an instant, so don't kill the messenger if they do.
