I was riding along one of the few lengthy paths in town(White Rock) on my road bike and was passing by a gold course in mile 3. I was close to the side of the path and there was some high grass, which isn't all that unusual. Unfortunately, this time from out of the middle of FRIGGIN NOWHERE a squirrel shot onto the path just in time to become friendly with my front tire. I didn't have time to react or anything, all I could do was stop pedaling and coast as my back wheel dribbled the squirrel along like David Beckham in the World Cup as this furry missile attempted to engage four-wheel drive and claw its way out of my treads. It eventually got out of the way and when I finally stopped and turned around it was gone. I have no idea if it's dead or regaling its buddies with a crazy story over a couple thimbles of acorn brew, but I suspect I saw it on my way back an hour later when - not even 100 yards from the epic battle of hairy rodent vs. vulcanized rubber - I saw a squirrel being chased away by a momma bird defending her nest. That squirrel is nothing but trouble, I'm telling you.

Squirrels are kamikaze.  I've had so many of them try and take me out, I now watch them very warily.  He's probably disappointed he didn't knock you over.

The secret to missing a squire that darts out in front...

Aim right for the little sucker...

Every time I have tried to dodge them or brake, it has always turned into a disaster for me...

You know, just before you came upon the aggressor squirrel, he was in the grass with his buddies saying "Yeah, he should be here just about any time now.  Wait'll you see the look on his face when I shoot outta the middle of friggin' nowhere.  It'll be great."

Welcome to the Squirrel Victim's Club! One got me while I was test-riding my new bike. His buddy was on the right side of the road, and he darted out from my left. I was totally distracted watching the one on the right. Never saw my attacker. I just rolled right over him. Bump. A clean hit and no squirrel in the spokes. I totally believe that they plan these attacks. And re-tell the stories to their little squirrelly friends...

I ran over one's tail once...but nothing can beat my near-collision with a deer !!

Was out crusing around Alum Creek Reservoir, riding in high gears, speeding away. Looked back to check for traffic, heard rustling in front of me...Looked up and I was about 1 ft away from the BIGGEST FREAKING DEER I'd ever seen! I screamed out of shock and it took off but I nearly plowed into it...wonder who would have one that one?

Wow...I hadn't thought about wildlife. Dogs I worry about, but now I have to watch for squirrels too? Sheesh, cycling's dangerous! Glad you avoided a collision!

I think you're onto something.
