Big gas guzzlers are a huge turn off. If someone feels they need (NEED) that big of a vehicle for everyday use, what other kinds of questionable, wasteful decisions are they making? Turn.Off. I don't get big cars, unless you're in the construction industry.
So I guess my wife with 3 kids shouldn't have an SUV here where it snows 10+ feet every winter. Big cars have their place. I agree with people commuting alone in a hummer etc, but don't throw a blanket over everyone driving a big car.

Nope, I still don't get it. It's just my opinion, not a personal attack.
I see lots and lots of families driving in safe sedans with 10" of snow on the ground. They make it around just fine.

C'mon! Everybody knows it doesn't snow in Kansas!

Civic Hybrid or Jetta TDI? I'd be buying this car for a possible 100+mile one-way daily commute and will rack up LOTS of miles eacj year. ~25000/year

The Civic is ~$22000. Nicely appointed, good horsepower, big enough. 41/46mpg
The Jetta is ~$25000. Better appointments, can get manual tranny, big enough. 39/43mpg.

The diesel is ~$0.50 more per gallon.

I worry about the lifespan of the hybrid battery. If it's waranteed for 8 years or 80000 miles, that's ONLY 3 years for me. The diesel will run for 300,000 and is built for a lifetime. Tried and true technology.

Does the extra cost of diesel fuel merit the worry about hybrid battery lifespan?

Diesel. the onlyreason its not the dominant fuel here - like it is in Europe - is because of the bad rep diesel gets. The new diesels are MUCH cleaner.

I personally think we need to have a crash program to make fuel cells practical.

I have no issues w the diesel except the incremental cost premium. I like both cars well enough to buy either.

What I'm concerned about is: For the Civic Hybrid: Does the lower initial cost and lower fuel cost merit the potential $8000 to replace the battery when / if it fails?

Are hybrids reliable for ~200,000 miles? I'm confident the diesel is, but the hybrid is less expensive initially. TCO analysis says the diesel might be.

Absolutely. Diesel is the same price as premium here.

If you're not running in city traffic A LOT (where you take most advantage of the electric engine), the hybrid makes little sense.

You people with your little Civics and Corollas can look down at me if you want, but I am perfectly happy with my big, bad Accord. It's a V6, too!! Bwwahhahahaha!

My first ever real car was a 1992 civic.  I put 150k on it, never have a problem before I totaled it.  (being young and stupid)

So, after some struggle, I got my second car - a 1996 civic.  Again, Its totaled after only 20k.  (Not my fault this time, I was crashed by a flat-tire spinout on highway)

Although I am very impressed with their quality, I stop buying civic at this point

My in-law's 98 civic has 300k on it and it still looks like day 1.  My parent's new civic is the most good-looking cyber matchbox I have ever seen.

Wife's family lives here. She also works here and her changing jobs doesn't help our situation. Also, selling and buying a house right now isn't the easiest thing to do. If we move 1/2 way between, then both of us have a crappy commute.

Just a contingency plan for now, but likely will become a reality as soon as I get a job offer.

2002 Civic, 160,000 miles and rock solid.

1995 Civic, 198,000 miles and has only needed routine maintenace for the manual transmission.

'93 BMW 325i.

224,000 miles. I beat the crap out of the car and it just laughs at me, taunting me to give it more. Heavily modded, too.

I hope this new job is awesome, because losing 3+ hours a day in the car sounds like an epic beating.

Go with the TDI.  I have a 2003 Golf TDI and I LOVE it!  It's been really reliable and runs fine.  I have 89,000 miles on mine now and the engine is just fine.  The manual runs well.  Plus, you get slightly better mileage than they tell you, especially on highway. I've gotten 50+ with mine.

I have a 2001 Civic with 73,000 miles.  I love my car so much.  It has never broken down on me and passed inspection a month ago with one lightbulb needing to be replaced.

It's a shame I am looking to trade the car in this summer for a Prius, but I really want a hatchback, so I can throw the bike in the back of the car instead of on the outside.

It will cost you about 2 grand every time you have the brakes redone because of the high cost of servicing and parts for the regenerative braking system. That's a nice entry level carbon bike!

You can put a Class 1 trailer hitch on your Civic for about $200 and put a hitch rack on the car for another $200. That beats the hell out of 2 grand for a brake job. There are lockable racks available so your bike doesn't get ripped.

The hybrids will get cheaper to maintain, but why be one of the early adopters unless you WANT to be an early adopter?

So, what would you do in my case?  My Civic is about 8 years old, and while the mileage is low, I am concerned about high maintenance bills as the car ages.  Also, I do not live around family who could pick me up quickly if my car breaks down.  And, I need a car for work.  Would you suggest simply buying a new civic (which would be cheaper than the prius anyway)?

Right now, the higher gas mileage for the prius was winning me over; however, if the maintenance costs more than the gas savings, then why does anyone buy hybrids?

The Honda Fit is a hatchback without the hybrid aspect of a Prius.

1996 5 speed 4 door Honda Accord. It has 240,000 miles and still gets almost 30mpg. I'm shooting for a quarter-million and then I'll think about a trade...market's so good right now.
