This article from 9news.com is quite disturbing.  This could be an explosive situation.  I won't be riding this one but know that we have some BTers planning to be there.

Threats made to disrupt bicycle tour

BOULDER - Alex Hearn has one word to describe the Sunrise Century: fun. It is not competitive and its primary purpose is to give people the chance to ride a bicycle through some of the prettiest canyons you will find anywhere.

<script><!-- OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1'); // --><script style="display: none;" src="http://gannett.gcion.com/addyn/3.0/5111.1/133600/0/0/ADTECH;alias=news.9news.com/news_ArticleFlex_1;cookie=info;loc=100;target=_blank;grp=192698;misc=1245298039927">

So imagine his surprise when he learned this year's Sunrise Century was being targeted for civil disobedience. Hearn started to learn about it when fliers started showing up in mailboxes in the area of Left Hand Canyon north of Boulder. The flier carries a title of: "Civil Disobedience, July 25th Block Dangerous Cyclist Day, Boulder, CO."

The Sunrise Century, which is in its third year, is expecting 1,500 riders to travel from Boulder to Lyons before turning south along the Peak to Peak Highway and descending through Left Hand Canyon. Riders have the option of riding a 75 or 100-mile course.

The flier specifically mentions the new state bicycle safety law scheduled to go into effect on Aug. 5. The law will require motorists to keep their cars three feet away from cyclists. It will also allow cyclists to ride two abreast on roads, so long as there is no traffic.

The flier goes on to say, "On July 25th in celebration of drivers' rights many cars will use the Left Hand Canyon Road, drive slowly and many may break down unexpectedly, blocking areas to the cyclists on the return leg of the 'Sunrise Century.' Please use judgment during this civil disobedience."

The Sunrise Century had already contacted the Colorado State Patrol and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office to provide traffic control and support for the ride. In light of the threat to disrupt the event, law enforcement officers may have an addition role to fill.

"Are you going to have people out there that do try to cause trouble? Maybe. Are we going to be out there to deal with them? Absolutely," Trooper David Hall with the Colorado State Patrol said.

Hall understands the frustrations that can arise between cyclists and motorists, but says both sides need to show restraint.

"This is not a new issue. I understand the frustration that motorists feel sometimes when they encounter bicycles on the road and I also understand the frustration that bicyclists feel when a motorist is belligerent to someone on a bicycle. This issue is a two way street," Hall said.

So, given the 'as long as there is no traffic' proviso (so riding two abreast legally couldn't possibly affect any motorists), basically they are protesting having to give cyclists 3 feet????

Wow. Things have sure changed since I went to school there in the early 70s. Back then (boy this makes me sound old)  it was just a few of us nuts climbing canyons and riding the Peak to Peak to Estes Park. Left Hand Canyon was an out of the way, back road up to Ward and Brainard Lake. If you saw a car, they always waved and we waved back. Good memories of riding my Frjjus with Nuveo Record components on a fine pair of silk sewups. My bike cost me $525 and was worth more than my car.

Doesn't sound real, does it? I went to Western State in gunnison for a couple years (mid 80's), and I remember riding all over the area, and motorists were friendly. Same around where I grew up in Wheatridge. Things have changed.

This sounds about the equivelant of a group trying to interrupt the Seattle To portland Double Century. Thousands of riders, 2 days of riding, lots of novices...It would cause a lot of trouble. It certainly sounds like the local police are on top of this though and I hope they do work to keep both motorists and cyclists safe. I just don't understand why motorists would wish to do that, even with a new law going into effect shortly there-after...

Yep.  They do nothing but antagonize drivers and make them hate cyclists even more.

I don't have a problem with it but I never ride through downtown Seattle on the last Friday of the month. I also notice a lot of arguments in the local papers about whether this is right or moral or Legal. Personally I feel it does nothing to advance the cause of Cycling awareness in my community and has actually dampened it in quite a few areas.

I kind of agree.

To me, this protest in Colorado seems exactly like a Critical Mass ride...

I think you may have mis-read the article. This is a century ride, in which motorists are planning on having their cars "break down" and cause other havoc on the ride course to protest a new bicycle saftey bill here. I don't really see how that is like a Critical Mass ride.

I think Jim is liking this to a Critical Mass ride because CM rides have been known to block intersections and generally disrupt traffic.  So instead of cyclists causing havoc for drivers, the drivers are causing havoc for the cyclists.

Please read the key words in my first sentence as well - "HAVE BEEN KNOWN".  Certainly not saying all CM rides do this, but some have.

I got it. The protest of the ride is, by having cars "break down", the same as what cyclists riding slowly through traffic do during Critical Mass rides.

I'm pointing out the irony...

These protesters seem to have stolen a page from the Critical Mass playbook.

The thing is Lefthand Canyon is long, twisty downhill.  If people riding down come around a curve and there is a car stopped in the middle of the road it's not just an inconvenience.

I think the first thing most 16 year olds learn in driver's ed is that driving is not a right, it's a privilege.  In what state/city does is say automobiles have exclusive rights to the road?

this is exactly like critical mass isn't civil disobedience great ....i support neither of these tactics however it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Cyclists can't shut down major cities with the support of said cities with no repercussions.
