It'll at least get you started. I just did session 1 today. Good workout, kept me entertained instead of just pedalling to no where. Lots of folks on this site also use the Spinervals DVDs for trainer workouts too. I don't have my tv set up down there yet, so I gotta use printed workouts for now.

I shove in a Giro d'Italia race video. Sprint when they sprint, climb when they climb. One stage after another. Closest thing to being there!

my public library system has tons of great workout dvd's (no spinervals, but I might donate some) I watched the TDF, lots of yoga, lots of kick boxy stuff that I watch and change my cadence/speed according to the music and what it seems like the instructor is after (intervals, strength, etc...)

I have several Spinervals and they are GREAT! I also received Chris Charmichael's TT Training DVD (TrainRight series) for Christmas. I popped it in this morning and it is an awesome workout. I also like the watch my Kona championship DVD's while I spin...

I have been cycling with Troy for about a year, so Carmichael was a welcomed solid positive variation. Like Troy, he has a great coaching style. It "seems" like a lower key presentation, but I was sweating buckets! In the one that I have, he doesn't identify specific gears...It's based more on maintaining cadence and heart rate...
There was a variety of athletes in the studio (although no introductions)...Some are individually talked to...All are intense in the workout...
Another cool part is that during longer intervals, it cut to scenes of Lance in his TT's!
I highly recommend it...

I've been riding Carmicheals TR's, "time trials" and "hills" this week. Good workouts and entertaining. You have to pay attention to figure out the cadence and HR stuff since the riders are working off power taps on the videos. But easy enough done with a veiwing or two. I have the Spinervals series coming shortly. Since I am stuck inside and doing nothing but rehab, eating and sleeping for 3 more weeks I'll be able to add more soon about a comparison of the two series.

I was on the Spinervals website and noticed they have some free workouts.  Here is the link, it seems they will email these workouts if you sign up for free.

Short comparison between Spinervals and Carmichael's tapes.

The GOOD: Carmichael seems to have a very speciifc goal for each tape and reviews the perspective rewards. He gives a very good warm up and a good cool down. Good back ground music and even entertaining with shots of different races during the work outs.

The bad: Hard to check the gearing used and not everyione has a power tap.

I really like the three Carmichael work outs I have done, Hills, TT and Sprints. Overall they are all high quality productions. The later ones better productioin quality.

Only done one of the Spinervals so far. # 5.0..."Mental toughness" 1.5 hrs. long. Easy to understand the gearing used but not as specific as it could be for power or HR. Not specific as it might be to the reasoning behind the workout and the perspective gains, besides "mental toughness" which is a bit Loose IMO for a 1.5 hr workout. 5.0 is a good tape for the beginner wanting to learn how to run his gears though. Warm up and cool down I htink could be done much better, but then I ma an old guy and beed a good warm up and cool.

I have 4 more Spinervals to go before I can give a better review and comparison between the two series.

Someone else just posted on another thread, "workouts in a binder" for cycling.  It costs about $30, which is about the same as a single spinnervals, and has 60 workouts in it.  Sounds like a good deal, I haven't tried it, but will probably order it.
