Welcome.  Keep watching the forums and there should be plenty of opportunity to swim, bike and run with others.  Have a blast!!

I'll be at Lake Geneva for the 70.3.  I'm a bit of a jaunt from you, though - Mayville, over an hour by car.  if you want to meet now and then i'm up for that - maybe in your area for a pool workout, or at some midpoint for an open water swim and run, or come take a trip out to the middle of nowhere and bike some rural country roads with me.

I'm doing the Lake Geneva HIM too, my first.  I live in Madison, but do occasionally travel to Racine for work.  I will let you know the next time I am in the area.

Is this another Frank Dobbs race?

Yes.  And I know the reputation of these races is always debated.  I have never done one of his events, but the timing was right, so I jumped in.  What do you know?

I did an Oly of his at the end of the 2007 season.  These were my observations:

1. Poor markings on the bike course, People wer coming in who were doing the half distance but only did the Oly bike course.
2. Not enough volunteers (on the bike course stopping traffic/giving directions, at aid stations etc...)
3. Poor design/layout of transition area
4. Same day check in people were very late causing people to still be checking in while race was already beginning.
5. Mere weeks before the event, the race lost it's USAT sanctioning.

Peronally, I am not going to do any of his races again (there are far too many well run race around to choose from).  BUT, if you are to do his races, just be very aware of safety/hydration/and of course, safety.

Cheers, hope this helped!

I've done two.  It was my first Oly distance race ever, and then again the next year.

Nothing started on time.

Swim distance totally off.  I mean, I'd like to think I went well under 15 minutes for a 1500m swim, but I kinda doubt it.

Bike course, barely marked.  Not much/any traffic control.  Both years I did the oly, numerous people got lost on the "half" bike course.  Distance was off as well.

Run, this is of course the hardest part to get wrong.  No real complaints with this leg of the race.

For me personally, I will never do another Frank Dobbs race.  There is a good reason that USAT revoked his USAT Sanction/Certification.

It's a nice venue, but that's about it.  It's definitely not a well run race, or IMHO, one that places racer's safety high on the priorities.

well, crud - i signed up months ago and now with the negative reviews i'm second-guessing myself.  I had seen "USAT Pending" on the website and figured it was probably OK.  my wife mentioned a couple weeks ago that the check hadn't cleared yet (though i did get confirmation that i'm in)... do i cancel the check and look for a different HIM around the same time?  i don't want to do get cheated out of distance, and i certainly don't want to do an unsafe race!

does anyone who has done this have any positive comments?

I know the last thing a person wants to hear after they've signed up for a race is they've made a mistake. I feel badly for those who haven't heard about Dobb's well-deserved reputation and signed up anyway. You had asked for something positive about the race, and I wish I could help you out, but I have to agree with the above posters. If you're able to get out, try SOR or Door Co.'s 70.3's instead.

I did a search on ST and trifuel and the news of his poor race execution is all over the place.  I won't be ready in time to do the July races in Wi. Is there anything else out there in Ill or MN to consider?  If not, I 'm doing this one and hoping for the best.

Interesting little thread. I had been planning on doing this HIM--in fact, one of my Seattle friends was going to cruise into town to do the Olympic race. I heard that the race director wasn't the greatest and I was like "yeah, yeah, yeah DTFU." But if the race distances are off, then I'm not doing it. I already dislike the intentional variation in race distances (e.g., a 400-meter swim and a 22-mile bike isn't a sprint race--it's a bike time trial). Unintentional variation in race distances is even worse! If I'm going to bust my butt all day in a half iron race, it better be the right distance! Otherwise a PR is meaningless, for example.

So, no more Lake Geneva for me. It's settled. I did a quick search and it looks like there's a HIM in Illinois in September, the Great Illini. I'm going to think about doing that one instead.

Just my 2cents.... ALL the above are true, but Ive done it a few times cause it is a challenging course close to home...and great awards. If nothing else is going on, and you want to race, do it. You are only as safe as YOU chose to be, at any time of racing or training. Course distance? Distance has been off in 3 of my 4 races so far this year, in one discipine or another. I just try to find the positive in any situation.

edit...as far as inaccurate distance, everyone at the race does the same distance as you. (provided you don't get lost due to poor course marking!) Good luck to all who do the race...I MAY see you there! Depends on if I do a half in Ohio a couple weeks later!

With every race course being so different, the distances don't matter to me.

x2.  I did the HIM as my first so didnt know any better.  There was one point where the HIM bikers were a bit uncertain of a turn but luckily Yams and I rode the course before.  Transition was a bit nuts with the various different distances going at same times.  However- the venue is beautiful and the run is a ballbuster going up Observatory twice.  Dunno, its not like there was hot coals coming out of the swim or whatever.  Have some folks gotten lost during Dobbs races?  Yeah, and thats not really excusable, but if you did sign up, its an ok race and your head probably wont explode.

Check cleared, so i'm in for Lake Geneva.  If anyone who's doing the race wants to head out there with me to ride the bike course a couple times before September to get the route down, give a shout out or PM me.

Here's a thought - has anyone ever expressed their concerns to the race director, and - if so - what was the reaction?

I think that your best bet it to just be on time, and be familiar with the course, and possibly bring a fuel belt for the run.

I'm sticking with this race.  I do plan to travel to LG at some point to ride the course and hopefully swim sometime in August.  I will let you know when and maybe we can hook up.  Until then, train well.

I expressed my concerns to the RD in the middle of a crowded Potbelly's, in downtown Lake Geneva, this past February, with my index finger 5 inches from his nose. The guy can screw up a 10k. It didn't get me anywhere, but it made me feel good. I heard his wife will take a bullet for him if you confront him.

I expressed my concerns in a much more pleasant manner, via email, a few years ago after an oly that was basically a sprint, distance-wise. I received a reply, about 2.5 months later saying, "thanks for your input".

If you do an event run by him, race carefully. Hopefully all will go well for you, but if it doesn't, please give him a piece of your mind........for your sake and mine :-).

Yeah I would be very surprised if this guy was unaware of his reputation. Every one of the races on his website gets negative reviews all over the web. He'd have to be living under a rock to not know that people aren't happy.

Ive won large beach towels, insulated coolers, and for an overall win a watch, but traded down for a fleece jacket that 2nd place winners got. They try for good food after also...pizza at the last one I did. Again, just know the course, and race safe, and you will be fine!
