Subject: RE: What are your favorite goggles?

I've been using the same Speedos that I bought about 7 years ago.  But, I "picked up" a pair at a race last year.  Actually, my friend who kindly packed up my transition area after my bike accident must have picked up my rack-neighbor's goggles.  I use them too.  They're kind nice, but are no-name.

At Wildflower last year, I couldn't find my goggles, so I bought a new pair at the expo... TYRs I think.  I liked them a lot, but now I can't find them.  So, it was either back to the 7 year old Speedos, which are pretty gunky inside now and make it hard to sight, or the green freebies, which are great, but not dark enough for mid-morning races as I learned on Sunday.  It made it even harder to sight with the sun in my eyes.

So, I decided to replace my missing TYRs and went to Sport Mart today.  I got a pair of Speedo something-or-other with dark lenses and metalized reflective coating.  They're UV rated too, which is a plus.

Basically, I think the best goggles are the ones that fit.

Barracuda Standard Funky foamy and comfortable, You have to work a bit to get them adjusted (trick is they have to be tight for first few swims) but they dont leave marks on my face as the aquaseal Seal Mask aka "razor blade" does. The Swedes are fun and look good but watch out not to pop them against you eyes if you slip taking them off

My fav cap is a bubble strap cap , retro , worn over a home made swim band, no red marks and dry hair.

I have the $9 Tyr's too. Not sure of the exact model, they've got a latex (I think) seal vs a foam seal. They are perfect... no leaking and very little fogging. What I like the most about them is that Tyr makes a women's model that fits a smaller head and that's why they fit so good. Got mine at a regular sporting goods store. $9 is hard to beat...

I had Vision googles when I had to have prescription ones, then I got the lasik done and wore the regular lenses in them until the lense housing broke beyond repair.  I loved them.  I tried both speedo and tyr vanquisher but didn't like them so I bought new Visions off the internet and I like them, just not as well as the original pair I had.

Good question!  I have been using Speedos since I was a kid, out of habit, but they leave marks on my face.  I've just been too lazy to try any other goggles out but I think I will now that I read this thread.

And a related question...how long should a paid of goggles last?  One post on here said someone has been using the same pair of goggles for years?  Mine seem to last a few months before they start leaking or fogging too much.

I used my first pair of Visions for about 7 years, I've had my second pair for about 3 years.

christyr1978 - 2006-06-12 4:15 PM  I think I'm gonna give those AquaSpheres a try. I had AquaSphere Kaiman goggles once, and they also leaked really badly. However, these Seal XP dealios I'm looking at seem to be a bit different. They have a MASSIVE seal on 'em. If those don't work, at least I've got LOTS of other options, thanks to you guys!

I have the kaimans and the Seal XPs.  On me, the kaimans don't leak and the XP's will.  If you get a really good suction, they're fine, but I've found them to be inconsistent leak-wise. The kaimans are gold, though (and come in junior sizes).

Oops, sorry you're asking about goggles. In that case Tyr Technoflex. For $9 you won't find a better goggle or value.

I second that emotion. The latex seal is nice and big and sticks to your face even without the straps. They've held up for me in a heavily chlorinated pool for the last nine months. And for the price, you can pick up a bunch of different tints.

Not sure about the gold framed goggles, that's just weird . . .

My 1st pair was a $2.95 TYR Racetechs. I loved them, never leaked and were comfortable. I couldn't find another pair locally so I bought a pair of Wal-Mart specials. Threw them away. Tried a set of Barracudas and couldn't get them to quit leaking. My eyes are extremely far apart for goggles. While out of town I found another pair of Racetechs. I have since ordered 2 more pairs from swimoutlet.com for the future. I have to have an adjustable nose clip and have it out as far as possible.

I've been using lane4 electra's just switched this weekend to Kaimen's....had really good success with them. I am definately goggle challenged....they never leaked and I didn't have to mess with them once in an olympic distance..... The lane4's worked well too - just wanted to test out the Kaimens. The other nice thing about them is they didn't hurt my face at all.

WOW! That's more responses than I expected!

Well, here's the update. I went to the nifty Triathlon Store (Triathlon World in Pleasant Prairie, for all you locals) and the guy who owns the place said I could try 'em (AquaSphere XPs) and return 'em if they didn't work out.

Well, they didn't. While I could get a decent seal without the straps in the store, I couldn't get ANY seal with my swim cap (and that big mass of hair on top of my head while wearing the cap.) Since I didn't want to return a used product (the guy at the tri store is just so nice) I didn't even get 'em wet. I used my old Speedos which only leaked a little bit.

I think I'm gonna try some TYRs. He's got some of those at the tri store, too. Maybe I can do an exchange.

I did, however have a great swim workout. It was my first open water swim of the year, and it was my fastest time yet! (The lake I practice in has a designated "triathlon lane" which is 200m long. -- LOVE IT!) I think I'm more bouyant in open water...crazy thought, huh?

I've been using Speedo goggles for 30 years. I've had a pair of Speed Sockets for about a year, and before that I used Vanquishers. I can't remember the last time a pair of goggles wore out - I usually just lose them.

I just bought a pair of Speedo Vanquishers.  Everyone I know that uses them loves them.  They come with 4 different size nose pieces.  So while I have not been in the water with them yet, I'll let you know when I do.
