I know this has been asked in the past, but I haven't seen it in a while... and I'm thinking about taking a clinic... I really need to improve my swimming - I mean I can get across the pool just fine, and I have endurance, but I'm SLOW... and yes, I'm VERY SLOW... I average 3:00/100 meters... I've heard people say they are slow at 2:00/100... I'd like to be that slow

I know I have problems with rotation, and my kicking just completely sucks! I think I go backwards during kick drills  LOL

I've taken a few stroke clinics with coaches, and I have improved a lot already, but their recent clinics aren't at the right times for me now... I called the Masters Swim near me, and the coach said that he won't really be able to give me enough much attention til August as he's preparing his team for a National Meet, so he doesn't really want a newbie to the team at this point... That's all fine and wonderful, but I have a Tri in September, and I want to be ready...

There's a TI workshop in a couple of weeks, and from what I hear, they are pretty good, but $$$  I'm wondering if I take the clinic, will I be able to work on my own until August and continue to improve... or if it's a waste of money if I'm not continuing to work with a coach?

Do you have any other suggestions on how to improve?

Thanks!

TI clinics are great.  Follow it up by joining a Masters program.  You'll quickly get that 3:00 down.

I have not been to the clinic, but I have the DVD and it has helped my swimming quite a bit.  I went from 26:43 for 1500m last year to 24:22 this year in the same race.  I'm sure the clinic is more beneficial than the DVD by itself, but you definitely can work on the drills and get improvement without a coach based on my experience.  My pool swims are actually slower than before for normal training because I'm working on form and not speed.  When I got in the open water for the first time with my improved form I was shocked at how much less effort I was using.  The race this year was over 2 minutes faster and took less effort.

there is alot of people that will say this works or this doesn't...

personally i have read the TI book, and have the DVD....I don't do the drills often but I did do it for the first month....

my swim times olympic races:

2009 27:33
2010 22:54

I did increase my volume but not by much, regardless I went from bottom of the stack swimmer to the front pack....

No, I haven't found my problem... the swim clinics I have gone to have worked mainly on the arms/upper body, hardly any on the kick... I have been told that I need to rotate my body more, but haven't been shown how... I don't have the money... that's the only thing stopping me... but if it's important to me, the money will seem to get there somehow

If you don't have access to a good instructor, then the TI stuff can probably work for you. You may be one of the people that it REALLY clicks for and you can get quite fast, but it will at least teach you a basic stroke that enables you to complete the swim.

At 3:00/100, you definitely have some flaws. If you have a chance and a willing friend, you could take some videos of you swimming and we can take a look and give you some things to work on.

It is possible to go backwards if you don't point you feet properly when you kick.  Your best bet and bang for the buck to learn to kick properly is invest in a pair of Zoomer fins.

That being said, the one absolute requirement to generate forward movement using a kick is the position of the foot in relation to the lower leg.   Think ballerina toes.  Your foot must form a straight line in relation to your lower leg.  Think dolphin tail.    The best way to learn this position is to point your toes and lock the foot into the needed position.   Do 25m repeats to get used to this position.  You will feel this in your calves.  They will burn.   But it is paramount to see that this is the only position the foot can be in and produce forward motion.  Also, kick from the hips and don't let your feet separate more that 18 inches distance during the kick cycle.

To get faster overall you need to 1) improve your technique 2) increase your stroke rate, and 3) increase your upper body strength.   Look at the best male and female swimmers.  They are all ripped on the upper body, and overall, for that matter.

Good luck and keep swimming.

Just look at tjfry's avatar photo for a perfect example of what the foot should look like when kicking.

bought the TI program and went to a swim coach.  got much more out of the coach.  TI was ok but the swim coach was better able to address my specific issues whereas TI was non-specific.  after 2 sessions with the coach my swimming had improved so much i abandoned TI completely.  i think in your case, where you already know how to swim and can do the distance, spending the money on private lessons with a good coach migh benefit you more.  my coach mapped out workouts specific to my pace to help me improve on time and helped refine my workout plan to work best for me.  TI is good but you won't get that level of customization.
