Subject: Aero Helmet

I am going to IM in 1 month and it will be a flat bike course. I have an old Trek bike with aerobars and pretty good Fulcrum wheels.

I have seen several threads here and some othe magazines that Aero helmet can give few minutes off on a 180km flat course. I wonder if I should feel silly with the bike I have and an aero helmet.

Tipically aero helmet goes with a 10k$ bike...

Wink

Nah, my bike and wheels and aero bars totals up to a little less than $2k, and my $80 Limar aero helmet looks just fine.

If you've seen other threads here about aero helmets, I am surprised you are asking if you should feel silly, because every thread I've seen here on BT gives an emphatic "No!!" to that question.

I have a roadbike with aerobars and I race with an aero helmet.  I couldn't give two cents about what anyone else thinks, and neither should you.

It's free speed (relatively speaking).  No reason not to use one.  I used my Giro Advantage II at Lake Placid and rode my road bike with no aero bars.

Based on some of the studies I've seen concerning bang for the buck, the aerohelmet should be one of the first pieces of aero equipment one buys, maybe right after aerobars and certainly before aero wheeels.

IMHO you'll look like an aero helmet dork weather your on a $5,000 bike or a $50 bike. But who really cares at a triathlon? There's a lot of dorks at Tris.

Either way I may get one for next year, but I still think there about the dumbest thing I see at races and my wife may disown me if she sees me in one.

But if it can save me some serious time on an IM ride I'm willing to try it and look like a total dork.

Good luck on your IM. Here's a comparison on Aero "dork" Helmets:

Good luck on your IM!

If you are going to get one, I would get it asap. I wouldnt want my first ride in an aero helmet to be 112mi and find out it kills my neck, or scratches me raw... etc.... do a couple training rides in it first.

So what is the current consensus on 'best' aero helmet? Most reviews and information seems to be 1-4 years old. One of the things that has been holding me up is the lack of current information.

There was a little snippet in Joe Friel's Blog about the "Turtle Position" as well as comparing two specific helmets and their effect on ONE rider. It was interesting. Tri Talk had an episode one or two months ago going over the results of the same wind tunnel test referenced in Friel's Blog [the host of Tri Talk is a coach at TrainingBibleCoaching.com so he's all chummy with Friel]. Maybe check those out, they seem to be fairly recent; <6 months.

Ok guys. I spent 2 days reading and together with all your posts, I was convinced to order the Spiuk white/black.

Thanks for your suggestions and links.

I hope to see the reward from using this helmet
