The gator was seen by a fisherman and was later pulled from the local lake where a Tri has been and will be held again on August 8, 2010...

More reason not to be the last swimmer...

they should make it the race mascot!!  put it on a leash and they can have it by the swim start as a bit of last minute motivation!

i hope they don't kill it.

according to a resident (friend of my wife's) they were going to catch and relocate the gator... or so the residents have been told.

I'll take a lil' gator like this over a shark anyday... lol!

Great... Towne Lake is not very far so if it does not have wildlife currently I'm willing to bet it will eventually.    All the more reason to have a swim buddy during an open water swim.  I would have thoguht some of the ponds in Bridgelands would have them in there being that they feed into Cypress Creek.    I guess will have to take up my co-worker's offer on "learnin' the gator wrast-len"...

I did this tri last year and I'm signed up for it this year but this concerns me a little bit. Guess I need to learn to swim fast.

You've got to be kidding?  Please, please say you are kidding!! Anyone know the refund policy? (joking...sort of!) I hope this really doesn't scare anyone away though, I've heard such good things about this race, I assume that every precaution will be taken to make sure swimmers are in as safe as possible an environment...right?!?!?

There was a gator last year at the Clear Lake Oly.  I didn't see it before the race (thank God, or I am not sure I would have been able to make myself get in the water), but several swimmers saw it while warming up.  I think you have to assume wildlife is in the water every time you swim.

Bridgelands Tri is a great event, and this post was not meant to scare anyone away.  Aaron, Ben, et. al. will do everything possible to make sure this event is as safe as possible... It would not be DURING an event that would concern me anyways... as with ALL peeps swimming, that tends to spook all other wildlife from our swim path.

It's the solo 'bandit' swimming that I would use caution with... no matter where (open water) you swim.

And yes, I remember the gators at Clearlake Oly... they were off to the side near the baot ramp, and they were significantly larger than this little guy...    Once again, more incentive to not be the 'last' swimmer... They always go for the stragglers. lol!

Smaller than the gator I saw in Clearlake while I was doing a quick run warm up 30minutes before the race started.

Clearlake was a good race for me. I too saw the gator before the race. It was a big gator.

Maybe seeing a gator prior to racing is a good sign.

There isn't a gator in the planet that would be willing to pluck their dinner from a swim wave of finely tuned triathletes, for the same reason you wouldn't tackle a cow out of a herd of stampeding cattle.
