Pre-race routine:

Packed all gear the night before. Excellent being so organised. Early to bed at about 9.15, slept well. Woke with alarm at 5.30. Incredibly nervous. Had a bowl of cereal with banana. Couldn't finish it all, guts were churning because I was so nervous!
Event warmup:

Rode down to St Kilda, nice short warm up and met up with the crew. Met at about 6:15, this gave us plenty of time to set up gear and test water. Brr. Definitely worth lying in the water before starting.
Swim
  • 05m 55s
  • 150 meters
  • 03m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Slow around the bouys, lots of congestion. Was initially happy with my swim until I saw my time!!
What would you do differently?:

Run faster out of the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

Stuck behind people who didn't want to run to road. Frustrating.
What would you do differently?:

No troubles undo-ing wetsuit, just getting it off over my feet and getting the bike shoes on. Should be aiming for a 1:30 in T1.
Bike
  • 14m 12s
  • 5 kms
  • 21.13 km/hr
Comments:

Minor headwind towards westgate.
What would you do differently?:

Push much harder. Avg on bike approx 25-26 kph. Should be pushed to at least 28. Wiggle toes - feet were numb. Remember to drink more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Run
  • 10m 47s
  • 1.5 kms
  • 07m 11s  min/km
Comments:

Difficult to run with numb feet.
Just took a few sips to drink.
Ran at comfortable pace of HR 178. Didn't push until very end.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up at half way mark.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fear of not making it to the end. I know I can do the distance, I should be able to push myself harder. There was plenty left in the tank.

Great job on your mini sprint!!! I hope you know have the confidence that you know you can do it. Next time you'll know you can finish so you'll be able to push yourself a bit harder. Way to go!

Well done Casie, you'll just have to push those slow coaches out of the way.

I also find it difficult to work out how hard to push yourself in a race, the last thing you want to do is go too hard and then be unable to finish. I'm sure we'll work it out with more Tri's and experience under our belts.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Well done Casie!! I did a couple of the Brooks last year but stepped up to the 1st Gatorade on Sunday at St Kilda.

I know what you mean about the cold water!! I stupidly didn't do any swimming training or jump in before the race on Sunday and I paid the price. Was one of the last out of the water in my category so struggled to try and get some places back. I'm hitting the pool tonight and will be doing some bay swims every weekend from now on. It's too hard otherwise.

Good luck for the rest of the season.......

Well done!
I was there too! Did the Gatorade race (my report is down the list somewhere) - man wasn't that water cold! My feet were numb until I started to run - couldn't feel a damn thing! Ahhhh - very cold.
Anyway - congratulations on your mini-sprint - bring on the next one!

Thanks for the support guys! I thought I'd put it up in the hope that it encourages some other newbies out there to give it a go!

I did a couple of Brooks tris last year too, but then I went os for 3 months (no training) and there was no way I was ready to step up to the Gatorade series. Many congrats to those who have, hopefully I'll be there next year.

Bring on this warmer weather, a few degrees in the bay would go down a treat!
