Subject: Getting fitted for my bike
Hey folks. Long time no post.

I am on a pretty tight budget right now as far as gear goes, but I am thinking I should really have my bike fitted. I bought it used almost a year ago and since I am a rather tall man, I jumped at a chance to get a decent entry-level bike in a relatively large size. The guy who sold it to me was great and said the fit looked good, but I feel like I should really have a professional (or at least pretty good) fitting done. As I am looking to put some clip-on aero bars on this spring, I think this will be even more important.

So, do any of you have any suggestions as to where to go to have my bike evaluated without spending an arm and a leg... or raising the wife's unnecessary money-spending alarms.

Thanks. Peace,
p2p

I know the cost for getting a fit at Now Bike & Fitness is $150. They abuse you for 2 hours or more to make sure you are right. I know people will recommend Gear West, and will say that you should go get the fit. I am having the same debate, and have the same alarm to deal with. I don't know how much Gear West costs, but I would look there. Otherwise contact the folks at Penn Cycle in Woodbury. They got my sister dialed in when she bought her P2C.

Yeow! $150 is more than I could convince my wife not to get upset about I think.

I'm in a similar situation. I bought my tri bike 2 yrs ago and was 'basic' fitted at GearWest at the time of the purchase.

I'm now ready for a 'professional' fitting that sets me up best for IM and takes into account having 2 yrs of tri riding under my belt.

I've heard the guy at Now Bike and Fitness is good, but would appreciate any direct references folks can add.

A professional fitting would be great, but I'd even be satisfied by talking and tinkering with someone who just has a pretty good idea of what is supposed to be going on with bike fit.

I thought I heard Gear West had got some new equipment for doing bike fitting, not sure if they have it up and running or not and the cost.

I got my done at Erik's by Chris Balser.  It made a huge difference, and the new saddle helped as well.  The cost back then was $110  I think he was talking about changing that, not sure.  I had an appointment with him at the St. Louis Park store.  Not sure how tall you are, I'm 6'1"

Gear West charged me about $100 to fit me on the used Cervelo I bought last year. I would say the experience was about a C+/B-. I have yet to feel truly comfortable on my bike, and I have done some tweaking myself that has helped.

I have heard that Eric's does a good, professional fit (http://www.eriksbikeshop.com/app/policy/bikeservice.htm, link to TRUE-FIT Advanced, center right of page). Also, according to Slowtwitch, the only F.I.S.T. certified fitter in the state is Larry Crawford at Penn, though I'm not sure which store that is at or even if the info is up-to-date.

I'm guessing $150 is about the ballpark you are talking for a pro fit, but I have heard that it is worth it. That said, until I am ready to do regular 3-6 hour rides, I'll probably make do.

Good luck!

I got a basic bike fitting from GearWest last year.  Took about an hour and I thought Drew did a good job.  Also mentioned to come back for free tweaks.  Which they honored.  It cost me $70.00 last spring.  If you look on there web-site they are offering some new type of fitting that is top of the line.  Called RETUL?  Offering a start up special for $200.00.

If you are looking to do some home-spun fitting, you can read all you want about one proven method at http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit06.html.

Gear West now charges $85. They videotape everything and I think have some good, advanced equipment.

I'd make an appointment with Drew? or one of the other experts.

Thanks for the information, everyone. I think for now I will try the link that was posted above. Maybe when I have more cash to work with I will go in for a professional fitting.

I contacted Eric's about the cost of their fitting, and Chris emailed me back. The cost is $230 now.

For Gear West they have 2 prices listed for fittings.
Gear West Positioning System: $100.00
Retul: $200.00
