Currently, my Polar HRM does not measure pace, avg speed and distance. I feel that in my level of experience and training, I need this type of feature.

I really would like to have this feature because if I slow my run down and I am not in my target pace, my overall time will not be at my target.

I know of the garmin 305...uses GPS

Some of the newer Polar's use a footpod.

Any advice from you all???

I live in a pretty hilly area, and I suppose you can get by with footpod measurements if you're diligent enough to get a good average.  So it's only going to be accurate for the total distance and not necessarily for intermediate splits, depending if you're running uphill or downhill.  Personally, I LOVE my new Garmin 305, works every time, and the distance calculations from the satellites are spot on with known mileages that I've checked on my bike computer over the years.  I vote for the satellite unit...one less thing to have to worry about (tying the pod onto your shoe).  My next door neighbor runs with the shoe pod thing and I see him salivating when I showed him the 305.

I had the Nike footposd and thought it stunk. I had to re-calibrate evertime I changed surfaces and it didn't handle changes in pace very well (horrible actually). If I was more than +/-20 sec in pace it would loose it's mind. It really screwed up my training.

That being said, I now have the Polar RS800SD. It's very accurate for both pace and altitude. I ran Hood to coast last year and it was very close on all three legs. Given that each leg was very differnt (terrain and surface) it really gave me confidence. I was running between 6:00 min/mi and 7:30 and it did great. I'm still kicking around the GPS unit for the bike but I think a dedicated unit is still better.

Below is a good website to check out. Lots of good info on all monitors.

PS Yeah, it's expensive but It makes really cool graphs!

My experience is limited at best, but just recently got a Garmin 305 for graduation and it is awesome, I have checked my distances with my bike, or when visiting family back east the truck, and was spot on.

Being able to map it on the puter is cool too, and seeing HR and pace compared to elevation is very helpful.

No experience with footpods though.

I have a wide variety (Garmin 305, Polar 625, Polar RS800SD, some Timex thing).

What do I find myself training with? The RS800 every time... thinking of putting the Garmin on eBay.
