Subject: 220 MHR???
I just did my 1st marathon last weekend and after all the excitement of finishing it I finally settle to analyze my race time, splits and HR data (I wear my HR monitor)
Anyway while doing this I saw that my max HR was 220!!! Can this be possible or just a malfunction on my monitor. I did push my self to the limit in the last 2 miles running at full effort. Plus the weather was not hot at all to influence my HR. In my past Max HR tests I register 196. And I used this to determine my training zones. Can I been using the wrong zones through my training all this time? Should I use this new max to determine my zones next season? HELP!
:-O

I've seen downloads from monitors that have spikes in them to ridiculously high HR's! These have been explained in a tri mag as electrical interference (eg Hi voltage overhead wires). Don't know whether this is correct or not. I do know that my polar watch only registers a HR of 53 when I'm in the car! Electrical interference again??

I think you have a false reading too but I would suggest that it is weaker signal to the heart monitor rather than higher external noise that caused it.

I have an HRM that stores all the heart rate data for down loading to a computer.    When I get a really high number, it is usually an isolated spike occurring really early in the run.  I reason that the problem here is poor electrical contact with my chest because I haven't started sweating a lot yet.  Poor contact means that the heart true heart signal is weak.  The monitor always has to select the true signal from noise.  When the true signal and noise are in the same range, the monitor sometimes picks up a noise spike as a heart signal resulting in a high HRM number.

Probably interference. I hit about 240 on the bike last weekend, and I'm still alive to write about it, so it was probably something funky. I was riding under some power lines at the time, so that was probably it.

If the belts read EM fields then interference would be the factor, however if they are acoustic based belts, then it would be bounce back giving the error.

I agree with other members here, that most likely the cause of it was electro-magnetic interference. I've experienced the same problem several times. I've noticed that it always happens when I am running along or under power lines.

Sure it wasnt just that last crazy push in the last .2 miles?

Ive had mine at 220 once in a spinning class

Now that actually could be your resting HR. Mine is in the mid-40's in the car, or when laying down, or when I'm freaking out the nurse before donating blood....

It seems to be the car. I can get into it straight after a run with a HR over 100 and it immediatley drops to a nice steady 53! The post with the Polar website link explains it all!

Subject: RE: 220 MHR???...mine gets into 230's
When I play soccer and sometimes when I run my my heart rate monitor gets into the 230's. I play soccer both indoor and outdoor in a variety of conditions and locations. Outside there are no overhead wires and no electronics. Every time I play soccer I get into the 230's sometimes for 5 minutes. I have a high end Polar.

With some advice from a tri friend I brought it up to my Doctor who ordered some tests and I had a stress test. So far everything is normal. Now I'm wearing an event monitor when I do activities that get my heart rate high. We can compare rates. They are trying to determine if I have arrhythmia. My heart rate only races that high when I have adrenaline kick...being chased or chasing someone down when I played soccer or when I first start to run after a walk warm up.

Before I thought anything about it...I waited until I saw the high MHR repeatedly and not just for one reading...but for a longer time. I also set my HRM to read every 5 seconds...so I could tell more if was a strange spike.

Any other ideas?

TW,

My high Heart rates are always early in my activity....when running first 5 minutes and when playing soccer usually within first 10...so you may have the answer for me. Are your high rates always in the early part of your workout and do they always reach the same level? My high early readings are always in the 235-239 range. This has happened probably 40+ times.

Thanks!

LOL.... I'm sure mine was at least that high in that spin class yesterday and I'm paying for it today.

This is the second time that a have the same reading while pushing my self so hard... the first time was during the summer on a very hot day doing the actual course of the last 13.1 miles of the Boston Marathon, but of course I didn't even think about it and assumed it was a malfunction...

Actually it doesn't surprise me too much. When I was in college all the intercollegiate athlete were subjected to "testing" which included max heart rate on a bike, Vo2max, getting dunked in the tank for body fat, flexibility etc etc. It was a long time ago, but I know my max heart rate was 220+ A lot depends on your fitness and your age and effort, condoitons etc. If someone else is pushing you on the max heart rate test it will probably be higher than 196....of course there could have been interference etc. I know I would have stopped LONG before I got up over 200 BPM on that test if no on e had been yelling at me.

i was running with my boss the other day and we both had our HRM's on. My display shot up to 225. i think it was just the cross talk between the two monitors.

I often get funny readings when the electrodes aren't making contact  just right. Always when running...usually a few tugs get rid of the problem (looks pretty bad when I am pulling at my bra, but hey, can't help it)  Worst reading came out at 288!!!!!!!!

I think heart rate monitors use an algorithm to project the "beat per minute" rate at a given time. There's probably a margin of error that, at the high end, could give you a heart rate of 220. I had that happen during a lactate test. I was breathing fine, actually having a conversation while I was running and the monitor said 228.

Remember you can always go old school and count it out when you don't believe the monitor. (Mine was actually 160 when I did that, rather than 220)...

TechGeezer's got it right...beginning of the run before the signal becomes 'stable' due to intermittent contact.  Also, I've had this toward the end of the run when the HRM slips down a bit - but once you reposition and it makes contact again it usually goes away (one time it didn't, at the end of a marathon, coincidentally, and it was because I dried out due to a great headwind as we were coming in - all the fluid evaporated, and again, no electrical contact).  One really fast way to check is next time you see that reading, stop for 10 seconds (a small price to pay, huh, for potentially carnal knowledge about how you work) and manually count the beats...

I did, however, have a friend (who has since moved away) who, at age 32, had a max HR of 228.  Saw it with my own eyes, tried him on 2 different monitors.  Guess he was just set up that way....but you could see his HR rise up to that level...it wasn't at 145 then all of a sudden end up at 220+...
