I'm an old bodybuilder who took a three year "layoff" and now I'm switching sports to Triathlons.

I never competed on the bodybuilding stage, but I can actually see myself entering a tri (in a year or longer).

Someone at my gym suggested I start with a 5k run or a bike or some other single event first. I'm thinking he might be right. But then, I'm alos thinking that since I'm pretty new, I might as well train in all the areas and get stronger in all three disciplines. I'm doing over an hour of cardio (all indoors in frigid weather). I can do a slow two miles running and average 33 miles (on the bike trainer readout). Swimming is VERY weak and will take the most work. I just took swimming lessons last year.

Any thoughts? :-O

I would suggest working on all three disciplines and you will be more comfortable about you first tri.  It want hurt to enter a 5k if you want.  If you feel uncomfortable on the swim, then go ahead and start your swim training.

Welcome. go for the tri. Work a 5k into your training schedule for extra confidence if you like. With your background you've got the discipline to do well. Have fun.

I'm with everyone. Work on all three--even if you sort of major in one.

Welcome!!

I agree that you should train in all three disciplines. You sound like you are in good enough shape to do the sprint training (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run). If your weakest displine is swimming, speak to a swim coach or at least someone who belongs to a swim team and ask pointers on technique.

I am in the same boat as you! I use to power lift, then got into body building untill I hurt my self trying to max on the ol bench, and then did nothing for 3 years. so I am basicly starting all over again. I would suggest doing all 3(run,swim,bike) but just take it SLOW. the programs on this site are great. i am doing the 20 week oly program and it is working great. It is just really hard to take it slow and if you come from a bodybuilding background you will know what I mean! Jack.

I just started training as well and I am finding that training in all three sports makes life a lot more exciting. I had started running five days a week in November and by the end of the first two weeks I was really bored.
Balancing all three sports makes me very excited to get my workouts in because I never do the same thing two days in a row.

I think today I'm going to try to bike in the afternoon and swim in the evening. I probably won't do that more than once or twice a week. I just have to see how it goes.

Jack, have you noticed that the mindset in this is a lot different than it is in bodybuilding? You really can't force it like you can in BB can you?

Training in all 3 disciplines is good just for the cross training alone.  Cuts down on potential injuries.  Entering a local race such as a 5K isn't a bad idea if you intend to race tri's just so you can get used to organized racing and how fun it can be to meet new people interested in the same things you are.
