Ok, am I the only person that does terrible at this type of session? I am a bit disappointed in how I did! I finished (at least tried to finish) the following:

"Start in big ring, easiest gear. Spend 3' in each gear gradually working your way to hardest gear (total 27').

Leaving it in big ring, hardest gear, do a 10' TT. Go small ring, middle gear for 5' spinning smoothly.

Go back to big ring, hardest gear, and do another 10' TT.

Gradually work your back to your easiest gear by 1' for cool-down."

My question is, is anybody else not able to even do a 10' TT in the hardest gear due to legs burning too much? I was able to do two 10 minute time trials, but it was in the 6th gear (of a 9 speed). Or do I just suck?

I could turn it over.. but at a very slow RPM. My big gear I switch to when I'm going 30+ mph. Not something I'm going to do a 10min timetrial in.

Where is the workout coming from?

For me say a Spinnerval  DVD gearing is to hard so I adjust it down to make it doable for me within the zone it should be. It may be the case for you.

I'm not out of bike shape or slow either just adjust it so it works for you. Goal is not to do the gears necessarily but do the workout as intended.

Is that on an indoor trainer? I'm not great at pushing a big gear - it's definitely something I'm working on but it'll come after some good overall bike fitness.

It's a session from one of the winter maintenance programs on this site. Yeah, I think that's what I've gotta do, tone down the gearing for now. I used to be able to push a more difficult year (not the toughest still) before the fall season, but I quit cycling for like 3 months or so.

So I'm used to hearing that if your cadence is too low, you may injure your knees, wouldn't this be a problem if I push too difficult of a gear?

Yeah, it's on an indoor trainer. My heart rate wasn't even that high! Just my legs were burning up!

Hi Kev

You are doing the workout right. It's not supposed to be easy  - the idea is to keep working on it - you'll get further down the gears the more fit you get. You'll see next time you try it. This time of year, unless you are used to these type of workouts, it's tough. The purpose of the workout is to challenge you. If you make every set of every workout, I would say your training is too easy.

You don't suck at all - but use this workout as a baseline and come back and try it again in a month or so and see how you compare. This is why we train - to challenge ourselves and to push ourselves further than we think we can.

Good luck!

I've done that one and have it again later this week. It is a son of a gun, but a good workout. I just adjust the gearing as needed and hope to get better with time.

I've done similar on a spinervals, and the like.  They are meant to suck.  The few others I've done, spinervals not withstanding, have said to generally adjust the gearing down to something a bit more manageable.

sorry for asking this, but...

when you say "27' is that 27 minutes?

I notice that my bike has some friction when I go to the extremem rear gear without switiching the front one.

I can turn the big front, and actually kind of prefer it.

Thank God my plan only calls for 3 minutes in that gear! Wowsa, that's a workout!

Yeah, 27 minutes for sure! I felt like the 6th gear was about the best I could do once I hit the 7th. Once I came around to the 10 minute TT, I wet back up to 6th since my legs were gonna be toast. I'd say I kept my cadence around 65 or so, it felt comfortable and didn't feel like I was going to injure my knees.

I always find I have a lower cadence when I'm riding on the indoor trainer...
